I am Justin! Slayer of Pumps!

Sending PM to greenhead

I'm not in a super rush as my backup pump is at least giving some circulation to the sump but I do need it fairly fast.

Still considering the Jeabo as it looks to be a descent pump with some flow choice capabilities. Eheim and Water blasters are a little much for my needs and mags are a little too big in width.

I've started an Excell spread sheet to organize my thoughts.

Just a side note, have you ever seen an external sump that is presentable as furniture grade? I've been thinking about it and it would allow easier access and larger equipment.

I am in a rush for Justin to get a replacement pump!
His frags are making my tank feel crowded, though I can't really complain because I have yet to receive an ugly coral from him.

It's a real shame, the luck our good friend here has been having...
(sounds like he needs some karma ;) )

eheim for the win. never had a problem with mine.

imo, my tunze seems to have restart issues. happened twice so far and works fine after a cleaning. weird part is there wasn't any obvious debris jamming it.

Next thing you know the ROC will nationalize your reef tank as part of the 9 dash line as they continue their bullying in the South China Sea.

geopolitical lesson of the day. think you meant China, not Taiwan

ROC = Republic of China = Taiwan
PRC = People's Republic of China = China

and knowing is half the battle, go joe!!

I meant both. Mainland China is grabbing territorial waters based on either one. China has always considered Taiwan to be theirs. The whole nation says one thing and do the opposite like the Russian aircraft carrier which they are turning into a "casino." Funny thing is they recently just started naming islands like the Paracels and Scarborough shoals when these had been in existence for decades. China is dependent on oil. They can't be a real super power without their own source of oil to supply their military like the US and Russia. The Chinese deceitfully made "joint ventures" with neighboring countries to drill for oil. That is the only way neighboring countries would allow them to drill in their backyard. When they found out how much oil their is below ground they turned around and started fabricating the 9 dash line which not only sounds absurd, it has no merit. I had been refraining from purchasing Chinese made products since the whole thing escalated. I have heard people saying if they get a couple of years out of a jebao pump that is money well spent. I rather have 10 years out of a pump that I know can be serviced for 10 years. Not a Chinese knock off. I am in this reefing thing in the long run.

Although I understand the ethics and economics of the long run, this pump is going for my nano tank for college. To be honest I cant understand how a cheap knock off can be the most efficient at 31.7 gallons per hour per watt used (unless I've done something wrong) and be $100 less then the pump it is copying.

Is it really that much better to buy a Reef Octopus for $160 instead $60? For the meantime I'm going to buy a Rio 3500 from green head and use it as a backup after I settle on what I want.

Here's what I found so far, some are missing due to things like size restraints. GPH is at the outlet, not at the height I am pumping to.
My findings:

Pump Watts Gal/Hour GPH/Watt Initial Cost
Rio 2100 37 692 18.70 $47.00
Rio 2500 55 782 14.22 $62.00
Rio 3100 73 900 12.33 $75.00
Tunze 1073.02 30 634 21.13 $90.00
Tunze 1073.04 42 792 18.86 $151.00
Hydor SELTZ 55 740 13.45 $60.00
Lifeguard 3000 55 819 14.89 $80.00
Laguna 600 32 600 18.75 $71.00
Laguna 960 57 1000 17.54 $104.00
Jeabo 3000 25 793 31.72 $60.00
RODV 3500 30 925 30.83 $160.00

Jet, the longer you are in this hobby the more you will realize that there are some things you shouldn't skimp on like a return pump.

I've been in long enough to realize that and it is what I am trying to do with my college setup. I'm just thinking that if I get three years out of the pump and buy another one, that it is still better then paying more then the price of two for a quality one.

I guess I wouldn't know as all but one of my pumps have been bought used...
I'm not so concerned with the functionality of the pump as much as the business practices of the company.

Everyone has there own way. I buy what I can afford that makes me happy. Funny things is other than an impeller I have yet to have a Rio pump fail and I have some old 2100's.

Jet, the pump your getting has the newer impeller with the swing arms and apparently a new compound that is much more leak resistant. When I ran it for a short time it pushed about 850gph with 6' head pressure. And they are so much cooler running than the Mag drives. Allmost don't need a heater if you got a mag.
