I am not a good photographer...Help Me w/ my Nikon D1

I am trying to use a Nikon D1 to get good photos of my tank and I need help because I am clearly not very good. I have not been using a tripod but could grab one from my father if that is going to help me. Here are some photos I took of my 220 Gallon tank this weekend. Thanks.

Man you must have some shaky hands. A tripod is going to be a blessing to you. You seem to be worse than average (no offense, there is a formula for the average person and you didn't stray far from it, even on the worst ones).
