I believe I have an Ich outbreak...quite shocked!!

Ed was not trying to sell me more CP. Ed and I know each other and that has never been my experience with Ed. He is very helpful and the CP was quite cheap...like $15. The clowns are exactly the same, no worse, it's really quite hard for me to see the patch on the female, but it's still there. They are eating and doing really well. I don't see any stress or change in behavior except that they are way more skittish in the bucket. They haven't settled much. I will go with 4 weeks at 75mg/gal for the first few weeks, that was Ed's suggestion since the pictures above look pretty bad. To the naked eye it doesn't look bad at all. No harm in treating though. I really don't want to do copper treatment so I am hoping to treat with e CP alone. I have 3 months to keep them in QT so I should know if it works over the longer haul. At least I hope to know :).

I have had excellent results with CP and imho its my preferred way of treating new fish to my system. To me its easier and takes less effort. It seems much easier on the fish as well compared to copper.

If you read the CP thread, you will find there are problems sourcing from this vendor.

Fishman Chemical is the vendor folks are having problems with. I haven't heard of any particular problems with Fisher Scientific, although I wonder if they sell to the end user. Most chemical supply companies do not.

Yes, sorry, not enough coffee.

Unfortunately, her response was that Fisher Scientific will never sell to an individual, only a company with an account in good standing. I would offer to buy some for you, but I have no idea what the laws are surrounding the transfer of chemicals between individuals.

It may also be that Reef Central has rules about drugs that are normally prescription. I would have to check on that.

I'm wondering if it is really classified as a prescription? There doesn't seem to be any restrictions on my ordering of the chemical.

I don't know. I think it is normally used as an anti-malarial in humans. I know my vet can write scrip for it (he happens to be a marine aquarium person) but many suppliers do not provide it without a prescription.

It's not a controlled substance per se, but it seems that most (all?) chemical supply companies deal with corporations and institutions only. I'm sure there are liabilities dealing with consumers that they don't want to take on.

Just as an interesting factoid: when I used to wander around Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, one can go down to the local chemist and get pretty much any drug with no prescription. Quality may be iffy, however, or maybe not.

Update: Two days in CP bucket (that's what I am calling their QT) for the two clownfish. Two things I have noticed is the large female seems more hyper, she swims up to the top when I come to look in on her, bobbing out of the water a bit and flitting all around, she'll go back down after a bit ...the only way I can describe it is "hyper". The male seems less hyper and more normal in his swimming behavior but he too is coming up to me when I am over the bucket, they were not doing this prior to the medicine. The other thing is that they both seem to be way less interested in food. Prior to the medicine they both polished off all food I gave them. The last two feedings they have left most of it. I know they both ate a bit yesterday but today its really hard for me to tell, maybe not much eating. They both look really good and seem to be breathing normally. From my research CP dose not seem to cause any appetite issues. Maybe because I did a bit larger dose? I am not sure. I am waiting to hear from Ed, he suggested that clowns benefit from the higher does but if I was treating my other batch of fish to do the 40mg/g dose. I may drop down to 40mg/g for my next dose when I do a water change.

Update: The clowns in the CP bucket are doing excellent :D. They show no signs what-so-ever of anything. I plan to run the CP bucket for another week and a half and then transfer them into a quarantine tank with the rest of the group. The rest of the group went into the QT reef tank in the garage about a week ago and they all look stellar. All in all this whole experience, while time consuming and a lot of work, has gone pretty well. I am sorry to say I ended up losing a few fish through the process. but that is better than watching all of my fish slowly perish over months if I had done nothing. My Choati wrasse pair have been super stellar through the whole process. The CP QT bucket has been super easy to deal with and once my clowns settled in, and I backed off the dose a bit, they have been troopers...even attacking me when I invade their little space. I took this as an excellent sign the first time my female clown bit the crap out of me :D.

Update: All fish are now happily cruising the 60g reef QT tank in the garage. The Choati's are fat and happy, the clowns look perfectly happy an dhealthy after a month of CP treatment in a 5g bucket. I have seen no signs of any disease on any fish for a long time now. I plan to run the DT fallow for another 3 weeks making it a total of 12 weeks without fish. I have kind of liked the tank without fish. Sounds weird, I know. I am sure it will be nice to get them back in there though.

didnt read through the whole thread but did you raise the temp in DT to help speed up the lifecycle?
unfortunate came in on the snails. no more buying inverts from systems that contain fish. as an extra measure ..scrub the shells with a hard brush.
