What you should do is stop where you are before wasting any money and READ plenty. there is alot of inaccurate info as well as alot of good info from the web, lfs, and other reefers. You need to look at what is working for reefers and what is not and put into practice what is working. If your not in a position to equip or have limited recources do not try to keep animals just to have them.
Understanding the reason for equiptment and why animals need certain paramaters is a huge advantage in this hobby (i.e. not wasting money, killing livestock, fustration)

I have a 29 gallon reef set-up running and I think it is a good sized tank, I dont run a skimmer, sump, refugium, and I barely do water changes and it is fine, it has been up and running for 4 years
you should be ok with it
