im not sure if it is my lights because i have them sitting on my tank but i dont know how i can do anything my tank is 75 when i wake up and after the lights stay on it gets up to 80 and i think that could be bad i have corals and 3 fish and they arent stressing or anything but i was just wondering if there is a way to keep it donw thank you

My tank normally runs around 78 when the lights kick on. It was 80 during the summer & I didnt have any problems. Are your lights sitting directly on your glass top? If so is there anyway you could raise them a couple of inches?

Your tank should be 80. If you have a glass top or a top in your sump, you might want to remove the tops and let the temperature seek an equilibrium with the heater...and NEVER believe a heater thermostat. Set it as if there were no thermostat by watching when it comes on and doublechecking it with 2 different type thermometers.

Your lights should have a glass shield between them and the water, but that should be part of the light fixture.

i will try to raise the lights off the glass a little i wish i had a canopy or something for that but i guess i will jsut make do with what i got. ill try that and see how it works

My tank fluctuates between 78 at night and 80 or 82 in the day when the lights come on. havent had any issues. has even gotten to 84 this summer which was hairy, but no ill effects.

I agree with fishdoc but another thing worth mentioning is that temp measuring devices are notoriously incorrect. Most of the ones i have or have dealt with all read 1-3 degrees high. These were the floating, round glass thermometers or the digital type (not a pinpoint).
With that said i keep my tank at 80.6-81.0 during this time of year and 81-82 during the heat of the summer. I use a lab grade probe calibrated to +/- .1F temp sensor.

i appreciate everythng guys i raised my lights up about an inch and now it is staying constant at about 78 is that good or shoutld i raise it a little

I'd say 78 isn't going to hurt anything. Consistency is probably more important than staying exactly at any one temperature. As you can see, Kaine's temp hardly moves anywhere. Most people aren't that good (lucky?), but having huge swings from night to day is definitely not a good thing. By raising the lights you will have less heat during the day going in so you'll be able to turn up the heater at night without having your tank go way too high during the day. That'll help you get rid of the huge fluctuation from day to night.

Read the link I posted...it will make you think about temp levels and consistency.

Edit: And yes 78 is fine. FWIW I wouldn't want to keep my tank much below that on a regular basis although I have seen some nice tanks at ~76.
