I Caught My Damsel!

Sorry I just had to share this moment of happiness with you all.

I had been cycling my new 65 gallon tank for a month and had a little yellow damsel in it. I got a percula and three chromis from the LFS a few days ago and since I was told that I should remove him, I did so with a net and got him in about three minutes, even though I have a heavily planted tank. I put him in the sump for the meantime and introduced the new occupants.

The next day I had a brilliant idea: why not reintroduce the damsel, I am sure the little guy will learn to live with his new friends!

Well, needless to say (do I really need to comment?) he did not "learn to live" with his new friends and immediately became the bully on the block. Since the tank is large for so few fishes, I was still a little hesitant to take him out. The chromis could simply hover out in the open relatively separate from the damsel, and the percula was bigger than him (bullies, in essence, are always fearful creatures and only attack smaller than themselves).

But alas came feeding time, and the little fish immediately turned into the ogre of our worst nightmares. What fury! What voracious hunger! All food served, be it live, frozen, or pellet, simply went to feed the voracious appetite of this hungry beast. My other finned companions had nothing left to contend with but meager scraps, after this remorsless ruffian had satisfied all his most basic of urges.

I was appaled.

Something had to be done.

I decided to take him out again, but this time the beast HAD LEARNED. Yes, he had learned! He knew where to avoid the zesty rush of the net, the quick slurp of the hand, the frustrated screams of an angered and hopeless owner who would in the process almost destroy his tank searching for the quick-witted demon lurking amidst the crevices and plants of his tank!

This morning, I built the Fish Trap. It was quite fun, "fishing" in my own tank. After about four, maybe five, minutes, the little demon was finally entrapped. And the nightmare of The Damsel was over.

I Think thats why they call them DAMsels, Nice little story dude, I think everyone has a DAMsel story, My domino is still in a 10 gal. Little Tough Guy.

LMAO! That was GREAT!
I had to take every last thing outta my tank to catch the
"Blue Devil" (blue damsel) in mine.... Little bugger...

that is very informative and funny at the same time. can you please share what kind of fish trap you used. i remember i had to remove all my rocks to catch goby.

See when I see threads like this it makes me chuckle, cause (A) I have a Damsel and (B) he has never been anything but a model fish, i have him in a 20g with my True Perc(Yes his name is Nemo) and My Pygmy Angel fish and If anyone of the three would be called a bully it would be my Angelfish. He chases the Damsel and tried ONCE to chase Nemo and well lets just say when the dust had settled he learned not to mess with nemo. My Damsel and Perc Often "School" together and swim side by side. Mine is a Yellow Tailed Blue Damsel btw

Vinnie,

It's so nice to see someone sticking up for the damsels. I have a true perc (yes, I know it's also a damsel) and a sergeant major damsel as well. My damsel is the model citizen. In fact, the other fish tend to pick on him. I would be sad if something happened to him. Maybe we just got lucky...

Good, now you can come to my house and catch my female blue damsel that has my $45 fridmani dottyback cowering under the rocks for the past two weeks. I'm serioulsy considering, after a failed attempt at a 2 liter bottle fish trap, trying to rig up some sort of harpoon with a bamboo skewer.

Maybe cause everyone seems to think my lil Royal is gonna turn evil(Royal is my damsels name) But Piglet(my angel) is the evil one in my tank lol

I've tried nets and traps with no luck the easiest way I've found is to tie a piece of fishing line to the mouth of a jar which you lay on it's side with his fav. food inside at the back. When they swim in just pull the line , standing the jar upright and up out of the tank , they always stay in the bottom of the jar.
My wife laughs at me when I hide behind the couch on the opposite side of the room with the line in hand waiting for that real timid fella to swim in.
