I am new to corals so please don't think I am an idiot for not knowing this one. Also I have a crappy camera. I got this from a LFS because I told them I "wanted to try corals" I was just curious what it was. Some kind of star polyps?

Yup- Star Polyps (aka Briareum, sometimes you still see it referred to as Pachyclavularia). Its essentially a type of encrusting gorgonian. In the right conditions it will spread very quickly (some people find it to be invasive- some really like it). It will handle a pretty wide range of tank conditions, though IME does best in moderate light and moderate to strong water flow. Keep your water chemistry in good shape, and it should be fine for you.
