I don't know about these Deltec's!

My living room is starting to smell like a "Job site Portable Toilet" thanks to the skimmate. This Skimmer produces black nasty skimmate, gonna have to put kalk in the cup to kill the smell. Feels good to be able to complain about skimmate, this was money well spent!

I don't want to start an argument but looking at all aspects of a Skimmer purchase based on my experience, these are the things to look at;
Top brands, IMO, Deltec, H & S, Euro-Reef. There are others more expensive but I have no experience or knowledge of how they work.
Customer Service/Support, Deltec= Excellent, Euro-Reef=Worse then poor, H & S never owned one
Price, Deltec and ER are about the same on same ability rated models, H & S is said to be same performance as Deltec but better build quality and cheaper.
Deltec invented the needle wheel and in my opinion engineers their skimmers to work as designed, a whole unit. Euro-Reef is constantly updating their skimmers with so called "Beta Models". Some would call this progress, but if you are the proud owner of a work in progress, customer support plays a big part.
As you can see I have a bad taste in my mouth from my ER experience, Euro-Reef used to have a forum on RC, the closed it several times and finally for good. Too many ER owners posting about poor performance and lack of customer support. You had to post on the ER Forum to get a satisfactory response. They say its better now, but I will never trust them again. I just put my ER up for sale here the other day, it would work on a 50, but I wont praise it up to sell it. ATR in Phoenix sell Deltec, talk to Skip (pyrrhus)about your needs, he'll set you right.

I am a deltec fan myself!!!!!!

Hey Adam,

I would get the H&S 200-1260 for your 110, I am running one on my 110 and the thing kicks butt. Cerreta is running a Deltec AP701 and ER-RC180 w/ Eheim 1260 on his 110. But I still think the H&S is better than either of those two (personal preference of course). My skimmer is big for the tank and I have yet to due a water change on my 110 since being set up. I think this is in part due to the massive skimmer that extracts so many nutrients that I don't have to work nearly as hard.

John- Did you really think that everyone was only joking about the smell in the Deltec forum? Doug really should include a clothespin with every skimmer.

Adam- You really have 3-5 choices in the Deltec line, 2 are submersible, 2 are external and one HOB.

The two smaller are the MC500 and the MCE600, basically they are the same skimmer except the MC500 is only for in sump or tank use and the MCE600 is designed for HOB. Most folks will agree that these two are a little on the small size, but if you need a compact skimmer these are the best you are gonna find.

A better fit would be an AP600 or TS1250. They have equal performance and the TS1250 has a nifty media chamber to hold your carbon or Rowa. The AP series are all external but can be run in a roomy sump, and the TS series is insump only.

If you don't think that the AP600 is big enough go for an APF600 (that's what John has) it will be more than enough skimmer and will be good for an upgrade in the future.

Of course there is always the 701 or 851, which would be entirely unnecessary on a tank of that size, but has the Eheim pump which requires slightly less maintenance than the Aquabee's.

I definitely want to keep the skimmer in the sump. I already have too much outside of the stand to include the calcium reactor and the chiller.
