I finally decided to get the squamosa Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d asked you guys about. He is so cool. I didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t know that clams were so active, his mantle is so sensitive to light and movement and his siphon moves all around. He has wandered around a little from where I put him but mostly just hopping with short little bursts of water. They are much more interesting critters than Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d though they were. I thought they were just amazingly beautiful.

He seems to be very healthy, Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve had him acclimated to my tank for about four days, but Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d had him on hold at my LFS and had been watching him there four about a month. He seems to be adjusting well and all is goodââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦.and , well I think maybe I found my new callingââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦I just love these guys. Sorry for being so long-winded but Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m a little excited.:D

Now to my question, Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve heard that these guys donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t show the type of visual warning signs like corals when things are going bad, they just up and die, but are there any early signs to look for?
I feel that Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m free of pyramid snails, as Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve checked nightly, and I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t have any reason to believe that I have could have any of the bacteria/viruses that have been plaguing some other clam keepers. so other than keeping my levels up and stable, my params in check and feeding DTââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s weekly is here any thing else I should be doing?

And finally, as long as clam #1 is still looking good, how long should I wait before adding another one of these beauties? Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m probably going to stick with a Squam,(b/c of my lighting 160wPC/29gl) not sure though.

Got any nice squammies TopTankââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦.I know you do ..Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll sure be checking out your selection.

anyone recommend another MO site for quality clams with reasonable prices and I get to see before I buy kinda thing.

Thanks---

You excited, Never :)

I have had clams forever and still get excited when I get new ones.

As far as signs to look for, mantles withdrawn and not extending, no reaction to movement. The bad things is when these sign start it's much like SPS, not a whole lot you can do other than feed and make sure that the crabs don't finish him off before he has time to recover from stress.

Do I have Squamosa's, maybe a few :)

thanks barry-
what do you guys think about keeping a crocea or maxima under these light high up on the rock work?(about 5"-6"under 160wtPC)
And how long should I wait b/f getting another one?

reeferaddict,

I would be foolish to say that you can't keep Maxima's or Crocea's under that lighting as I know there is a lot of people that due with success. It is recommended that they be kept under intense lighting so that their symbiotic algae in their mantles will develop.

As far as waiting to get a clam, that is up to you. I know of people that order 3 or more at one time.

A great book to get is Daniel Knop, "Giant Clams" and I also stock that as well as well as Amazon.com does.

Hope this helps :)

Now you'll end up like the rest of us. The "first clam" is the first step down a road to addiction. Congrats on getting your squamosa. I really like squamosa's a ton. Post a picture when you get a chance. And I agree, I find my clams to be very interesting and have tons of personality! OK, maybe not a ton of personality, but I sure like 'em! :D
