I'm getting a 4-6'' gigantea from ibluewater on Tuesday. I just talked to bob, he says he will ship out Monday. He's had the anemone for 7 weeks now in QT, looks healthy. Fingers crossed everything goes well!
This is the third time I have ordered from Bob. The two others times I was very happy. He's always had me wait for the clownfish to be QT. This is the first anemone i have ordered from him. I'll keep it updated.I'm sure Bob mentioned that pH should be relatively stable, but I'll say it again for those who are interested -- target 8.3 with a minimal swing. My pH is on the high side at about 8.4 but my gig doesn't seem to mind.
In terms of flow, they like a lot of it. Indirect flow is the best. Mine sits directly under an MP40 in nutrient export mode, set at about 80%. It actually extends its column up to get the most flow it can. If you have an MP40 or something similar, make sure to put on the foam cover. I learned the hard way that gigs can raise themselves up quite a bit, and it got caught in the MP40. Fortunately it recovered, but it lost about 1/4 of its oral disk and serves as a constant reminder to keep the foam covers on, even though they need to be cleaned frequently.
Please keep us posted on the nem. I've heard both positive and negative feedback about iBlueWater (specifically regarding gigantea and whether or not he truly acclimates for has long as he says he does) but I've spoken to Bob and he seemed both knowledgeable and trustworthy. I almost ordered a gig from him but fortunately found one locally.
Good luck!
Good to see it's in the tank, hoepfully it will settle soon
Looks very healthy. Good luck hope all goes well Gigs can be very tempermental when aclimating to a new home.
Sorry poor choice of words on my part. Intended to mean looked healthy for a new gig. When I got my blue gig about a year and a half ago it came in with a gaping mouth almost no tentacles, and those that were present had almost no color at all. Mine was the size of a dinner plate and shrunk down to about baseball size before it began coming back around and coloring back up. In my opinion (I am definitely no expert but do have a gig) as of now it looks better than most gigs that are newly introduced. Definitely better than mine looked and it's still going strong in my tank. Nonetheless I hope it does well they are extremely beautiful when healthy.I have to disagree. Looks stressed to me -- has "balding" look and the tentacles are short. Looks more like it's still acclimating, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's healthy -- yet.
IME, this particular color morph doesn't fare well, especially when they have the pastel color. Purple tips on a brown base seem too do okay, even bleached ones recently have had better results.
If the gig starts to expel zooxanthellae you may want to consider drastic mesaures (removing from the DT and placing it in a quarantine tank with antibiotics) to prevent the gig from melting.
If it's about the size of a bagel, out of curiosity, which size did Bob sell it to you as?
