I get the stupid award this year. You guys wont believe what I did lol.

I accidentally added kool-aid to my aquapod instead of water.
When I got home I wanted to lower the salinity some being my hydrometer is off and the kid begged for invisable kool-aid.
Now I know why it was always colored before lol.
I ran out of RO water for my tank but had a jug of water in the fridge. I knew it was kool-aid the first time lol and added water.
Then I added more and grabbed the wrong jug.

So far everything looks fine but I'm afraid. The PH and alk are low.
the frags all opened up pretty much. I put them all in there before the blonde moment.
I dunno if I should move them to my 55 or wait and see cuz they look fine yet.

heres the thread I posted in the reef chemistry forum.

I KNOW I'll never live this one down lol.

LOL! When I saw the title of the thread I'm thinking, how do you not notice your water is turning red while you're pouring?! :wildone: Never knew they made invisible kool-aid, that's just not right. Anyway, I'm no help cuz I have absolutely NO idea how it would affect your tank, but I hope everything is ok.

I didnt know they made invisable either till my kid was at the store with me and we noticed it.
Guess what? I'm never buying it again lmao.
Funny thing is I hardly ever buy kool-aid at all. Her friend was coming over so we got some.

Anyway I think it will be ok. The PH is up to around 8.0 now and alk at 200.
If someone else would have done it I would'nt have ever known because everything looks normal. I think the acan liked it cuz it had it's feeders out ever since it happened lol.
I'm just worried I'll wake up tomorrow and everything will be dead but I would think if it was really bad the corals wouldnt look good.
The sugar could deplete the O2 though cuz thats alot for that size tank but the water didnt cloud up which is a good sign.
From reading my sugar threads I think the water clouds when you get too much bacteria from the sugar and thats when the O2 could deplete.

I'll keep you posted.

Keep an eye on it because like you said the sugar feeds several bacteria. You might not notice the cloudy water for several hours to a day or so. This also causes the O2 in the tank to dive. Keep several powerheads running to aid in the exchange in your water.

We call kool Aid kook aid in our house. It makes kids go nuts. So now when people ask about your frags you can call them crazy colored kookie corals.

Can you tell I just got out of bed...lol.

I would think they will be fine.

So we should think twice about getting any of your new "ultra" colored frags? You may want to run some carbon to help pull out the preservatives and dyes that are in kool-aid. When you come right down to it though isn't this almost the same as your sugar experiment in your larger tank?
Look at it this way. Your kids now have a really cool science fair project for this year. Either "What happens to a coral reef tank when koolaid is added" or how much koolaid added to he rreef tank does it take to drive my mom ccrazy (crazier).?

I always run chemi-pure in all my tanks.
There is no dye cuz it was INVISABLE lol if there was I wouldnt have ever added it. It looks like water.

No it isnt the same as my sugar in my 150 because theres a whole cup in kool-aid and I added 2-3 cups of kool-aid to 12 gals.
I only add 3/4 tsp to my 150 gal.
What can happen if too much sugar is you get a bacteria bloom and it can deplete the 02.
Plus theres acids in kool-aid and my PH dropped to like 7.6 and alk to around 100.

Today theres a bacteria bloom and the whole tank is white.
I changed 5 more gals last night at 4 am and water was still clear this morning but now totally white.
I'm going to keep changing water and hope it's ok.

kass

I just changed another 7 gals and can see in the tank now lol.
There was only a few inches of water left in the tank.
I really didnt think it would be a big deal either but I think I was wrong. The PH wouldnt go up so I now added a kalk slurry which is what Randy Holmes said to do.

Nothing looked good before but they're opening back up again.

I think I'm just gonna let it now unless it gets bad again.
I would think most of the kool-aid would be gone after changing 16 gals of water.
I should have just did a large one in the first place but everything looked good until today so I did'nt.
I hope my poor little saddled blenny makes it through all this.

They all think they're in Jonestown lol.

Kass... this deserves a pat on the back. :) I'm sure everything will come out ok in good time. It could have been worse... When I was a kid, I mistook a glass of bubble blowing soap for a glass of water, and took a good chug! I'll never forget it's thick and gooey texture and soapy taste as it slid down my throat.

Thats nothing. We have to take the bar soap out of the shower when my daughter is in there. She will eat it. She loves the taste of it.

I dunno it's still all cloudy even though I changed alot of water.
On the last one there was only a few inches left.
After the WC it looked better but then a few hours later the corals started closing again and water was more cloudy.

I really could just cry about it and how stupid that was.
I was in the middle of doing 10 things at once as usual lol and did'nt take my time and think.
I prolly should have just moved all the corals to my 55 but did'nt.
I did'nt see anything dying so far just not open and looking good.
I thought my fish was fine he still eats like a pig but not sure about him either.
Now I ran out of salt lol so just gonna have to wait and see what it looks like tomorrow. I hate to keep changing a bunch of water to.

On a serious note... Sorry to hear about your misfortune Kass. Don't be hard on yourself... although none of us have probably ever dumped coolaid in the tank by accident, we've all done our fair share of stuff like that. :) Anyways, sounds like things are a little more serious for your tank than I thought they would be. I'll stop with the jokes, and keep my fingers crossed for you. Let us know how things look today.

Kass, could you move the skimmer from your 55 and use for the nano for a few days?

Also, I pulled a dummy myself. I mentioned to someone at the meeting I was past due to add kalk to my reactor. So, Sunday morning while patiently waiting to leave for the game, I decided it was a good way to kill a few minutes. Right in the middle of it my Mom called and I forgot all about it. I left the cap on the reactor off :( Dosing pump for the topp-off eventually came on and I have no clue how much RO and kalk was wasted as it continued overflowing the reactor onto the floor. Although, the concrete is now very white from all the kalk!

Yeah I know we all do dumb stuff but the kool-aid really takes the cake lol. I'm sure it won't be the last time I do something stupid like that either lol.
At least you did'nt overdose the tank Scooter did you?

I don't mind the joking Alan I have a sense of humor lol ya might as well laugh about it.

Well the update is it's starting to clear up. Corals are starting to open like the zoa's but they arent real happy yet. I think/hope everything will be ok now.
I did a 2 gal WC tonight cuz thats all the salt I had left lol.
I did lose a yuma but it was'nt doing well to begin with,
The snails have an odd slime ring around them prolly from the bacteria but seem ok.

My PH and alk are still low PH around 7.8-8.0 alk is around 240 ppm on that strip test. I'm guessing that means 2.4 meq but not sure It doesnt say and only goes to 300 ppm but my tanks usually are around the 300ppm.
Randy Holmes said to add kalk slurry for PH and I did but I tested my calcium and it's 520 so don't want to add anymore.
I want to add baking soda (he originally said not to but not sure why). I dunno how much to add cuz I never had low PH before but I'll ask in the RC forum.

I always thought my calcium test kit was wrong cuz my tanks always measured high like over 600 and I don't add calcium that much but I tested all of them and the nano was 520, my 55 was 450 and my 150 was 660. I'm thinking it's prolly right.
I always had high PH and calcium so maybe it's my well water dunno. I do have hard water.

I don't think my skimmer would fit on the nano but I changed so much water already I think it will be ok.
The worse thing about sugar is it can deplete the O2 from the bacteria bloom so normally if you add it you should have a skimmer going though.
They also say it helps with bacteria die off but I dunno about that. My skimmer went nuts at first when I used sugar in my 150 but now it's running normal. It would have been best to have one.

I took water out of the nano enough so the pump would blow bubbles for more 02 especially when the lights are off.

I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping it's out of the woods now.

My next fear is a mini cycle if there was any die off. I see the starfish and some pods running around though so think theyre ok.
