on trying to troubleshoot my noisy Durso standpipe out.

My Durso is having an intermittent noise cycle problem- a few seconds of silence then followed by a loud gurgling sound. I tried drilling a 1/16th hole but it was too small. A little bigger second hole but still too small. The third hole was supposed to be the charm but no luck. This time it was too big!

Any advice?

Why do you think the third was too big? I use a stepped drill bit and just keep making the holes bigger until the siphoning stops.

try gluing a cheap control valve in the hole to adjust the air intake...hope this helps it

get some tubing down the hole 'till you hit the air pocket, that gets the air out

Next time use a screw-on fitting for the top of the durso. That way if you need to make the hole smaller you only have to change the cap and re-drill. Also my dursos eventually fill with salt creep and having a screw on cap makes cleaning a snap.

I drill a hole big enough so that I can screw on a hose barb fitting (one end is screw type and the other end is a barb fitting). Then I connect the right size hose to the barb fitting, and let the hose run down to the stand. And the end of the hose, I connect a quick connect fitting with a valve. Now I can control the airflow. In addition, any noise is conducted down into my stand.

I got this idea from Matt Wandell, and it has worked great for me.

Yeah, definitely don't glue the caps on. I use a slip cap but don't glue it on. They should come off for cleaning and adjustment. If you decide to slow or increase the main pump flow in the future, you will want to change the size of the hole-unless you use a valve. I don't have a canopy and, with the height of my Dursos any added valve would be seen.

I drilled a hole in the cap, put a piece of tubing down the hole.
Then I put a valve on it, and on the other side of the valve, I put an air filter/muffler (think about the little plastic thing that comes with powerheads).
The muffler was THE ticket that made the biggest difference.
Of course I already had the previous steps in place, this was what made it all 'nice'. I think the muffler would allow for more variance in air flow, but wouldn't let the air suddenly 'speed up, then slow down' like an open hole will.
That, and it got a lot quieter.
On one tank, I took the valve off, put the muffler on the end of some tube, and slid that down the hole in the cap until it was silent. I little silicone around the tube to hold it in place, and I never touched it again except to clean out the muffler when it would accidentally fall in the water while moving stuff around :|

I think the hole's too big. You need to go smaller. Put a piece of tape over the hole and use a small needle to poke a hole. That's what worked for me.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried to finish my aquascaping and have not touched the Durso since yesterday morning and won't porbably get to it until tomorrow. I'll try the valve mod and see how it goes.
