got them fedex overnight priority (arrives by 10:30am) all 3 arrived very lively. do not ship mantis shrimps with anything longer than overnight. trust me, i've tried it a few times. they have survived 2 nights in the tank so far. two are about 1" and one is about 2". the two smaller ones are both green and white in a checkered mottled pattern. the larger one is a dark color, possibly green or purple. they are living in mainstays 2 quart plastic containers. recycle #1 (same as soda bottles) got them for $2 at walmart.

they don't say bpa free and they do have a plastic smell. after rinsing them i rubbed the plastic and it made that clean plastic smearing sound. i tested making holes in a 20 oz coke bottle with a metal shishkabob skewer. it was harder making holes in the mainstays. i also used a cork opener to enlarge some holes on the top for feeding. i ended up using a manual hand drill (not electric powered) to make the rest. (the kind you have to crank with ur hand like a cake batter mixer)

after the first night, i dropped a small piece of mysis and one of the small mantis took it. the dark one would not take his food. the other one hasn't come out of his jumbo turbo snail shell.

after the 2nd night, the small one again took his food. but this time he walked around his jar for a few minutes.

the dark one still hasn't taken the piece i gave him the day before. the other small one still hasn't left his snail shell. he won't even show a piece of himself.

my bicolor blenny loves the mainstays. he perches on them. the blenny watches the mantis and the mantis watches him.

Those are the Jars I'm using, same brand too. Mine said BPA free on the label though.. I just searched through walmart and there is no other jars that brand makes that is the same. You should be good.

The problem with small mantis is that you have to feed them Mysis. I gave mine the tiniest piece of krill a few nights ago and it kept floating to the top.. eventually I had to hand feed it (which wasn't fun btw..) the krill so it doesn't get wasted.

Try putting a feeding stick in the container.. if it shows any sort of aggression torwards it then its fine. My G. ternatensis wouldn't even hit anything or go after anything and starved...

Btw, where did you get them?

interesting. i got mine in the kitchen section. i went to target as well. hardly anything said bpa free on it.

I got mine in the same section. Its the same brand and same containers no doubt, I was also told BPA wasn't something to stress over anyway.

i just got a good look at the dark one. it is dark green. the one that hasn't come out of his shell is still alive. i caught a glimpse of him.

everytime i feed him he seems to take a walk around the jar. i think he's looking for more food. but then he goes back inside. i think he's scared of the blenny.

They smell the Mysis and look for it. Mysis smells unlike most foods which drives them crazy for it. They also scavenge to see if there is any more. My peacock goes nuts looking for krill.

do you think i should put sand in the jar? how much?

I would, I aim for a sand bed the same length of the animals. For those guys I would make like a 2 inch sand bed since they are more rock dwellers than digging. Mine doesn't have sand since its was more of a temperarly containment.

I had a nightmare with mine last night btw.. when feeding.. one of my ocellarius clowns decided to jump in the container and say hello to the mantis... then inorder to catch it I had to put my hand in there to catch the clown..

Hungry Mantis+small container+my hand+ocellarius clownfish= a scary moment... thankfully no one was hurt... surprisingly

I think my sailfin tang was detracting the mantis through the container for me :lol2:

one thing i noticed is if the jar isn't level, the mantis can't walk around the jar cause it's too slippery. i'm wondering if sand in the jar will be too hard to clean though. what are you moving your mantis to?

I'm building a 10 gallon mini-reef, and I was going to make a DIY side refugium and put the mantis in it :bounce1: I noticed that too, they do have trouble walking. Your containers are floating sideways correct?

they are sideways, with the handles on each side and flat part on bottom. they are resting against rocks so they don't move and stay level.

Ah ok,

As far as cleaning, don't bother. Mantis are very very messy animals in general. Mainly because of all the leftovers they leave in their burrows and lack of CUC to go in there and clean. No matter the setup or container, I can't picture someone tearing it apart to clean a "thumb splitter's" burrow, its just no point.. reason skimmers and well established tanks are a good thing to have for these.

My peacock filled up the collection cup of a 60 gallon skimmer on a 6.6 gallon in a week... it slowed down a little now.

I'm pretty sure a O. Scyllarus has the stomach the size of a pin head so no need to feed a lot at once. They will kill a very large prey or multiple small ones all at once and store it away. I have seen mine kill 5 grass shrimp at once carrying the dead ones with it as it killed the others then take them to it's burrow. That can end up messy. Regular feedings the size of a pea would be fine. Feeding it something big I would wait close to a week to feed again.
