I got me a Part 2!!!

I brought Part 2 of "The Package" home around 4:00 PM yesterday afternoon. We got the last gorgian "planted" about midnight. Eight hours of awe, discovery, amazement and appreciation!

The tank is a 135g acrylic bullnose set out in our living room as a divider. It is 30" deep, so planting stuff was kinda tough - I thought I was going to need a snorkle at one pont....

We opened the six boxes and immediately pulled out the critters. We had two guys over painting some of the rooms of our house and even they were amazed. I think there was a total of 17 bags of goodies - of course there was the promised snails, crabs, cucumbers, shrimp and serpent stars (one was HUGE). But there was also 5 anenomes, one sally lightfoot crab (??), one goby and probably 7 other bags of gorgian/corals. I had to float all of these guys in my 120g sump AND 55g refugium to get them acclimated.

Pulling the rock out of the boxes was awesome. Nothing smelled bad and the rocks were covered with sponges and encrusting coral. I can't wait to get the lights on to see what else came along with it because we found all sorts of stuff on the first part of the package once it got in the tank.

Dealing with the rock quickly got the nickname "The Great American Crab Hunt." My girlfriend took the presence of the bad crabs almost personally - calling them all sorts of derogatory names that dealt with family history and sexual preferences.....

I feel sorry for the kid that walks up to OUR house next Halloween dressed as a crab. He's gonna get a face full of seltzer water and attacked by a madwoman wielding chopsticks - followed by maniacal semi-psychotic laughter...

You can't praise TampaBay Saltwater enough. There is no way you could get this quantity/quality of stuff for the price, convenience and service.

The kids got home just as we were finishing up and we still squealing with surprise after we went to bed. I'm including pics - I haven't put the canopy back on while I do some work while I have access.

This is a shot from the side of the tank. Just look at all the color and life. Who else can provide a tank like this the day you add rock?

168353Tank_Part_2B-med.jpg

Pic across the nose of the tank. The curve magnifies the tank and makes it look surreal.

168353Tank_Part_2C.jpg

Look at the cucumbers! They were huge and immediately active. There is one all the way up near the overflow today. Look at the stuff growing on just that small piece of rock!!! I thought the plants would die off during the cycle of Part 1 but they weathered it like a charm - not that there was much of a spike - 0.3 ppm ammonia max.

168353Tank_Part_2D.jpg

Look at these two guys! They didn't look like much in the bag but man 'o man was it awesome watching them open up.

168353Tank_Part_2E.jpg

The hermits mauling a gorgian as if they were teenage girls in a room alone with David Archuletta....

168353Tank_Part_2F.jpg

More life!!!! That's actually two condy's back there. I thought it was only one, but when I dropped it in it split!!

168353Tank_Part_2H.jpg

Look at this one!!! As soon as we opened the box that purple color was just awesome!! When I put it in the tank it dropped down on a rock and ended up under one. We hope it comes out soon cause it's stunning!!

168353Sumproom1.jpg

The sumproom downstairs where I floated the critters. It was full of floating bags and I had to put some in the 'fuge for room.

This is the canopy to the tank. Because of some poor planning on my part I had to mount the light in such a way I can't access the tank through the canopy. So you can see the little pneumatic cylinders I have rigged to at least lift the canopy up 6".

I'll take more pics once I get the lights back on.

WOW! Your tank is amazing. do you have a build thread somewhere?

Richard told me he had harvested some killer rock, looks like you got some of it :)

Nice looking tank.........I would place the photosynthetic gorgonians high up in the tank as they like lots of swaying flow and good light, and be careful about planting any gorgonians or sponges in the substrate as the bases may die out.

By the way that brown "fuzzy" kind grows really well for me.

so well I have to prune off some of it every year or it would take over.

just cut a length and use a rubber band to hold it on a rock, soon the flesh will attach to the rock and you have a new colony.

it will survive all maner of things, I have not had the others do as well for me. but the brown one can survive a tank crashes, high temp, bad water .... like the energizer bunny, just keeps going...

Divemonster - I did want to do a build thread. However, there were so many starts and stops along the way I never really got it done. I did post a thread when I put Part 1 in two weeks ago that is still on the board. I asked a lot of questions here at RC and wish to thank everyone that took the time to provide really excellent answers.

Richard told me the same thing about the rock. He wrote and asked if I was ready for the second shipment - GREAT TIMING! *L*

Howard - I had read somewhere that the gorgians should be "planted". When Richard pulled them, did he just cut them off a rock?

figuerres - do I need to cut it to stimulate growth or can I just rubber band them to the rock now?

Thanks for your input guys!!

Thanks for your input guys!!

from my exp. you can do almost anything to them and they just keep growing.

if you use anything to stick them on a rock they will take care of the rest, cutting is just when they need a "trim"

I have a 90 with two big clumps, had to cut them back cause they were so tall they were geting sucked into my Tunze streams at the top of the tank, so they can grow at least 18-24 inches tall.

they will branch more if the top is cut, so if you get a single tall "pole" you can chop it in two and the base will branch.

they will make a lot of "snot" when you cut them ... just keep the water flow going and it will stop in a few minutes.

I have not seen any fish or coral show ill-effects from the snot.

if they get in touching range of other corals you may see them swell up and get funky looking... in that case move the other coral or them as seems best...
they will recover quite well.

also the polyops will some times retract for a while, seems random both how often, for how long etc... just seems to be normal for them to do that some times.

and if the water flow is not to high and you feed the tank you can see the polyops grab food and retract.

my colonies started as buds. about 2003 is I think when I first setup a 55 reef and got some of richards rock.

when I first saw them I thought they were anomoneis, they where just tiny "lumps" soon I knew they were not anemonies.

I have seen new kinds of sponge showup in my tank even in the last 2 years, I have a very nice clump of black sponge, some white, some orange balls that were on the first batch of rock
some pink/lavender

some of it does not like the light and only grows in places you can hardly see.

and I have a pistol shrimp that has been with me for all this time and I have only seen him 2 times, but at night I hear POP!
from time to time as he hunts his meals...

and tons of pods....

look at night and you can see them all over... or in my sump sock.

I have seen a hermit crab releaseing what I am 90% sure were hatchlings.

Oh Wow!

Oh Wow!

I was feeding our new fish today when one of them swam rather close to what I had thought was a rock...

Until it moved!!

I'll be damned - it's a clam! A pretty big one too. And I even put a piece of coral that Richard had put in the shipment.

How friggin' cool is that!

Yes, like tree sponges the are typically found attached to a hard surface.

WAY cool! :D keep those pics coming! Your tank is so unique.

Okay......the tank is pretty stable now. Been through the initial algae bloom without too much fanfare. We've added our first fish and the tank has cleared up nicely so I took some more pics

168353Condys_RJ.JPG

Richard threw in a ton of condys - I think there are a total of five throughout the tank.

168353anenome_1_RJ.JPG

I really don't know what type of anenome this is....

168353decorator_RJ.JPG

The decorator crab is cool...he's always trying on new clothes....

168353slipper_RJ.JPG

We're growing kind of attached to this guy, but he's eating all my snails....

168353clam_RJ.JPG

Here's the clam I was raving about....the picture is terrible (sorry) but it's hard to get good focus through the rounded front.

168353cowfish_1.jpg

This is the family's favorite. He follows you around and will kiss you back if you kiss the tank. I've heard the horror stories about these guys, but we have our fingers' crossed.

168353lawnmower_RJ.JPG

This guy was the single biggest cleaner in the tank......I'm not sure if the entire family is sold on him yet, but he was my hero....

168353no_clue.jpg

Another gift from Richard that I have no clue what it actually is......

168353tank_side.jpg

And a picture of the entire tank as it is now......
