I got a Canon Rebel XSI. The Camera itself came with a everyday lenses(18-55mm) and a Zoom Lenses (55-250mm). Than my parents decided to be even nicer and go and get me a macro lens. Its a fixed 50mm Lens. Im very Happy with the setup and have been taking photo in school for one semester and will be tacking photo 2 next semester so i now how to use it. What do you guys think for a amateur photographer.

Hey, that's awesome. MAn you don't need anything but a basic camera to learn. I shot with nothing fancy for a lot of years (and even ended up having an image I took with my first camera published). Just learn about composition, find your style, dial your exposure technique. That setup will do great.

Take it with you where ever you go. I try to, but the one time I forget, I see something I'd like to have it for. Make it fun. It's better that way.

Congrats on the new gear! Kits work better than I think most people give them credit for....and with a macro lens you are off to a really good start. When I started posting to forums people couldnt believe the photos I took were taken with kit lenses.

now go take some photos and post em up!

heres a few I went and took today Do you GUys shoot in raw or should i shoot in something else

I took some others but they're not to good; I liked these though, they were both taken with my macro and i also like this one, taken with the zoom

Once you figure out RAW you won't want anything else. Only real downside is that you have to process all your images into JPEG for use with anything really. But with RAW you can change anything about the image without altering the actual pixels. Exposure problems are over, sharpening is a breeze. The learning curve is quite small too and the software you need probably came with your camera.

RAW gives you more options but each image needs to be processed to take advantage of it. If all you do is "convert to jpg" then jpg straight out of the camera will be sharper.

yeah I used raw for these, than used the program that came with my camera to convert them. I see that the pictures are less pixely up-close.

Great for a starter! It should suffice your needs for now. Pick up quality lenses before you body upgrade, and you will enjoy your gift even more. =)

RAW is better than Jpeg, but dont be afraid to mess with Jpeg settings. At times I cant really sit down and edit. If you can tweak settings to your likings it will save you time. Enjoy!

i am doing my second semester photography..Black and white..and what i here try to take a picture with out thinking bout editing it after..if you have to think bout you can fix it later you're doing something wrong before you start...

I just got my first DSLR too! I got a Nikon D90 though. It sure takes a while to figure it all out, but I'm already getting much better pictures than with my old point and shoot. Looks like you are getting some good shots also!
