I gotta vent about the system.

A lady comes into our car lot a month or so looking for a car. She said she was a Katrina victim & the red cross was going to buy her a car up to $10,000. So we wrote up a Durango for her & sure enough here she comes with a check for the Durango. The check of course is made out to us. She then asks if she can get a $1000 car & get the cash back for the difference. Of course we say no. She then goes on to tell us about how thr Red Cross has given her over $100,000 to buy a house, furniture, car, clothes, and anything else she could think of.

I just gotta vent about people like this. We get them in all the time where the state pays to fix their cars, yet they have nice clothes, phones, and audio systems in their cars.

Im not saying some people dont need & deserve help. It is the people that abuse it & dont need it that really get under my skin. That is what a good portion of our taxes go for.

Im done venting now.

I'd have politely torn up her check.

I'm sure that money is well deserved, though.

/off to build a luxury condo on a sandbar

The check was written to me, we made good money on the deal. Its just the idea of it that bugs me.

...declines to post thoughts on this issue due to all the T.O.S. violations that would surely occur....

I used to work in a gorocery store. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that I had to carry a case of steaks to their BMW or at least nicer car than mine and the $250 worth of steaks for the month were all bought with food stamps....

Really makes you wonder why we even work...

I knew a woman with 4 young children got $600 a month in stamps, She was always eaing steak & stuff.

What is a TOS Violation?

Yep, I knew I shouldn't have read this thread! My blood pressure is starting to rise exponentially!!!

The government needs to stop all forms of assistance - PERIOD.

I don't care if it's fires, floods, eathquakes, tornados, whatever. No where in the constitution does it say "To provide financial support" to anyone, or any entity.

It states simply "To provide for the common defense..."

So, if we stuck to the basics of "the common defense" we could lower our taxes immeasurably (like 3% for a maximum rate).

Every Friday, when I enter my paycheck into my "Quicken" software, I see this cute little pie chart that shows me how much of my money goes to taxes. For the last 3 years, it's never been less than 62%. Don't believe me? Just take a look at your phone bill - you pay a 10% "fee" (cute name for tax) for government mandated internet in schools, and a "911 surcharge" (oh, so surcharges aren't taxes either? LOL). Yes, on a $22.00 phone bill, I pay $2.40 for that. Or how about the true price of gas only being $1.25/gallon, but with government mandated "road use taxes" we pay over $2.60. And don't forget the 7% sales & local option tax... or the recycling tax... the property tax... car registration "fees"... FICA... Medicare... Socal Security... Federal income tax... State income tax... YADA-YADA-YADA

This of course, is why I could never be president. I expect people to be self sufficient. And I would make sure that any laws passed by Congress would also apply to them. (none of this crap of being a congressman for 2 years, but getting a lifetime pension; or the fact that they don't pay into Social Security like we do)

That way, the people would take care of themselves - the way the government was originally set up to be. The founders NEVER wanted the government to be running the people, but rather the people to be running the government.

{sigh} WHY? WHY? Why did I read this thread?:mad2: :mad2:

:D :D :D :D

I don't mean to get into to an argument, but there are people who did financial, food, housing assistance from the government. Not every one can make it on there own to feet. Yes, there are people who abuse the system. I would have to say that government assistance is what makes america, America. It is the basis for a democracy. America is providing to poor people to help them make a better life for them and there family, If they did not have the assistance, where would they turn? If they can't get a job becuase they are un educated who fault is that, theres. It doesnt matter when they can't find a job. These people turn to the streets. Why do you think the highest crime rates are in low income housing areas, or the slums of chicago. Because they don't have a means of making it own their own. Yes this is their fault i am not saying it isnt. I am saying what YOUR country does for them, us, you, is what makes America a great place to live

Note I did say some people need & deserve help. It is the people who abuse it that I am venting about.

heck if you dont want to work, you can come here to bettendorf iowa and buy a permit to panhandle, stand on the bridge and beg everyone coming and going to work for their money, but you gotta pay for that permit first.

sheesh

Reminds me of yet another story. Worked on a fairly newer car (02 taurus or something like that). He came into pay his bill and paid almost $300 in ones. I asked how he got all those & he said he & his brother goes from town to town sitting by walmart streets. Said they make almost $50 an hour sitting out there.

My sister and her husband have been in college for 8 years now. My sister stays home with their two kids to home school them and her husband is getting a masters in an art major. He wants to teach art at a college. They havn't had money for a long time and have come up with some pretty inventive ways of saving money like making their own wet wipes and stuff like that.

Anyways they recently were forced to move out of a friends house they were staying at for almost free due to a mold problem. Now they have to pay a lot more for rent and got on a government food program. The Government said they would give them an amount that was 2 times more then what they were currently spending on groceries. When they told the people they only wanted half of what they were going to give them they were told you have to take it all or nothing. So they took it all and have been donating their extra food to a food bank.

I'll jump in quick, only to say I don't think government assistance is what makes America, America. Individual freedom and responsibility makes this place America.

On that note, I do want to point out that given what I've seen go down on this forum in the last couple of weeks, we probably want to be careful discussing a topic like this. It could go sour real fast.
