I Hate Charter!!!

ive never owned satellite before, but from watching at friends, etc I have to say that my digital cable pixelates just as much as satellite...seems like once a day it pixelates on me

But not all of us have an option. Like me, I live in an apt. And most apartment complexes, the owners don't like the look of 50 different satilite dishes all over the place. So they will only let you get cable. And with only one cable provider in the area, they know they got you. What you gonna do, try to use a coat hanger.

When I had DirectTv I used to lose signal in heavy weather. Now I don't have any problems with Dish. I've heard the complete opposite though so maybe it depends on the install or something.

I have a two TV setup with one of the signals split to 2 tvs. That means that we can watch something in the living room and something else in the bedroom and workout room. The same signal goes to both (bedroom, workout room) so what's on in one, is on in the other. It's been like that for almost a year now and has never been a problem.

We have TV in the living room, basement, and bedroom, and every one of them can be, and very frequently are, on very different channels. So I can't do a split signal deal.

What will inevitably happen is there will be competition one day in the not too distant future, then people will leave charter in droves. When they are bankrupt and scratching their heads, it will be too late. Why? They didn't care about their customer base and outsourced a lot of their support to a foreign country that isn't capable of support. They only cared about the bottom line of money, not what it takes to keep a customer base happy...that is always service.

Meanwhile, their monoply will go on and I patiently await the day the competition drives into town.

Yup - although I am not so patient myself. I was just thinking about how we need to organize - this is just wrong and shouldn't be allowed to continue. The hard thing is that I guess you have to address it municipality by municipality. There is no point (or motivation for me, personally) to go picket Charter; I hate them so much that I no longer want them to improve - I want a competitor just so I can switch and tell Charter to kiss my ***.

MayoBoy - I hate satellite dishes! They are so ugly!! Plus we have basic service, so there is no comparison when it comes to cost.

its to the point, that if a competitor came to town, I would be willing to pay a few bucks more to switch JUST to see charter go down in flames. I hate them so bad I can't even put it into words...I would definitely be for competition....can't wait to see the day!

the problem isnt with TV, dish is sweet, but there are no other options for internet...DSL is way 1999, cable is the only route for internet, and cable knows that, so they offer irresistable bundles

Just curious why is DSL so 1999? I have 6Mbps down and 600kbps up for 26 a month from SBC (Sorry AT&T). Looking at charter's prices online, I can tell you it is great to be an old timer from 1999. Faster speeds for less money.

Maryland Heights has the option of two seperate cable companies... cable america and charter.. I have cable america for tv and charter for internet and phone... For some reason even though im in the middle of the metropolitan area sbc cant provide dsl for me...(dsl speeds are determined by your distance from the central office... or at least thats how it used to work)

When I moved, I turned off my Charter Digital Cable, Charter Internet, and Charter phone. They took back the Digital cablebox but the technician left the cablemodem and telephone converter box. I asked him about those as well and said that they didn't need to be returned.

After about 3 months, a collection agency was harassing me for not paying for the modem and telephone converter box. (I don't even have them....I left them at the old house). I never got one phone call. They apparently couldn't find my address or phone number (even though I started Charter Cable at a new address and they really did have both) so they turned me over to collections. The collection agency says that since I didn't dispute the charges within 10 days, I'm on the hook for these items. I told them that this was the first I've heard of it. Apparently, the first notices went to my old address.

To this date, this issue isn't solved and the collection agency keeps threatening to ruin my credit rating if I don't pay up. I keep telling them that it is Charter's employee who should have it come out of his paycheck. He's the person responsible for their loss.

lol Charter just got bought out by time warner in SoCal... i am glad i have DSL even though its not as fast it always works lol

I had DSL (through SBC) a few years ago, and it sucked. It frequently went out also, but at least their customer service reps were not totally inept. I'm so fed up with Charter that I am considering giving them second chance - maybe things have changed now that SBC is associated with AT&T. Or maybe I'll try a different DSL company, although I do like to have as few bills as possible.

Outrageous...!! Have you called Charter? I think I would call Charter threatening legal action of my own. Who knows whether you'd get someone capable enough to actually address the problem, but I doubt the collection agency can do much until Charter calls them off.

I hadn't really thought about it. It does very for individuals.depending on your distance. I am less than 5000 feet so I can get pretty much any speed they offer. In that respect they are a little on the 1999 side.

I used to have dsl when I lived in St Charles and was less than a quarter mile from the co ... it rocked....

i've had sbc dsl for a couple of years no problems only out once or twice while upgrading area, i have 6 mb service and can actually pull 5mb can't beat that for 28 bucks a month. But you want other options my brother in law and his buddies started a new internet company called wisper internet at wisperisp.com ask for bill verstraten they got access points set up around madison county some in st. louis maybe not sure there a little high but you get what you pay for if you get 3mb service you can pull full 3mb its wirelss there is a receiver that goes on house like a satelite dish. Supposed to be good but little costly i'll stick with att dsl.

no phone line or cable line needed for this service

I have been forcing myself to not read this thread because I hate and love charter. I love my internet, and HD reception. I simply love watching TV in HD, there is nothing better. And I have simply called and complained enough to get a better price. I pay around $100 a month. And I have the gold internet.

Why I hate charter.

Addresses have been changed
In November of 2004 I moved into a house on 333 1st Avenue. I think my dad called and gave charter the address of 333 4th Avenue. He told me and I called them back and asked to chnage the install to 333 1st Avenue. No problem.

The saturday comes like 4 weeks later whne they are supposed to show up and I get a call form the install guy, he dosent see my house on 4th Avenue. I say you have the wrong address I give him directions to my house. He installs everything and changes the info on the bill/install form.

Three days later a guy comes form charter unanounced to install my services. I tell him its already done and he says ok and gets back in his truck. He knocks on my door again and asks if can see my equipment. I say ok and he writes all of the serial #'s down on his install form that has 333 1st Avenue on it. Everything works for months and I pay the bill that comes to my house.

Then in March of 05 I wake up and my services dont work. I call charter and they say i owe them somewhere around $800. I am baffled I show up at their offices in MAryville with a stack of bills and bank statements showing I have paid my bill. This was needed because the telephone is useless in matters like this. They say they will fix the issue, but do not explain what happened.
Two weeks later the collection agency calls. Problem not fixed. With another month of talks and direct dial phone calls it was fixed.

The original install guy had not changed the address oin his info when he got back to the office. They had been sending a bill to 333 4th Avenue for about 6 months.

The best part is that there is no house that actually has this address. The serial numbers were the same at both addresses so when they shut 4th avenue down they shut down 1st avenue as well. They never called and asked why I wasnt paying the bill. Same phone number was on both bills.

Other than this problem and the internet having too much power at one time (is this possible) I have no complaints about them. I would like a smaller bill.

Some people I work with simply call about once every 6 months and threaten stopping service because they cant pay their bill anymore (farthest from the truth) and they get a cheaper bill for a while.

I think all employees are required to take an IQ test. If you're smarter than average, you WON'T be hired. :D

My last name isn't exactly common. I'm not a Smith or Jones. One would think that they could find me in the system and give me a phone call before turning me over to a collection agency just like they did to you.

The next time that they call, I'm going to tell them to sue me. The court transcript will be a matter of public record and I want to show the world just how screwed up this company is.
