I Hate Charter!!!

i was also trying to avoid reading this thread. I am currently waiting for the install guy to show up and install my cable telephone, since they were unable to make the appointment during the time they set last week.

but, i am really stuck between a rock and a hard place. my only other option is sbc and they suck as well. although i almost always have sevice from sbc they always have billing problems. make a change and it takes months to get all the charges figured out so that you only get charged for what you have yada yada yada.

they both suck, but at least I get poor service at a discount from charter. i guess thats a benefit?

I've had SBC DSL for 6 years, and they've been near perfect. I considered Charter once in the past, but when they told me I had to buy/rent my cable modem from them I said "no thanks".

DSL performance is great and the few times I've had problems they've been more than helpful. You don't deal with SBC directly on DSL issues, you deal with a third party that's technically proficient and can actually resolve your issues.

Dish Network handles the high def!

:D

FWIW, I am going to be getting a new computer around January and I plan on running that one with satellite. This will hopefully ensure that I always have internet connection.

dave:)

I was looking for a smilie that says - YOURE DREAMING!!!

Satelite dish's have problems all the time. They need to be readjusted and do not work well in heavy weather.

I wish it were different, but it's not...

I have Charter and have had few problems out in Wentzville. It's probably due to the low number of subscribers out here compared to ya'll "city folk".

Moving into our new house in a month and have to use CenturyTel - think you have it bad - try CenturyTel!!!

my charter phone has not been able to accept incoming phone calls for 17+ days now. I've called 3 times and they just say their network engineers are working on the problem. How hard could it possibly be to make my phone work?

I just found out yesterday a little tidbit of information that makes Charter's screwups make a LOT more sense to me. None of the people you talk to on the phone work for Charter....they are independent contractors or work for another company that is an independent contractor for Charter.

Additionally, none of the people who come to your home works for Charter.....they are independent contractors or work for another company that is an independent contractor for Charter.

Charter does it again...

I'm glancing over my Visa bill this evening, just checking a few items, whatever catches my eye. I use this card for everything so there is a lot on it. I notice a $61 charge on 10/14... Charter. OK, that's the normal amount. Then I note a purchase for $123.28 on 10/19. Hm, what was that for? Maybe groceries. No, CHARTER. Ummmm.

After checking with my husband to make sure he didn't order anything I'm not aware of, I call them. I confirm that I'm on auto-payment. The woman tells me that I have been charged for an "auto-payment reversal." HUH? Basically she is saying they tried to bill me, but it was reversed, and she says I need to talk to my bank. I tell her that not only do I have like $4000 of available credit remaining on the card and am nowhere near my limit, but that there is a charge for the amount that was supposedly reversed (and no negative charges). I repeat to her, for clarity's sake, "There are charges for 3 times my normal monthly bill on my credit card statement."

She puts me on hold for a while and comes back to say that she has to "put a form through," and "someone will call [me] within the next week" to talk about it.

This is just outrageous. Thank God I got a wild hair and decided to look over my Visa bill more closely than usual. I have had it. I'm thinking about buying some damn rabbit ears for TV and going back to DSL for internet.

I'm glad I no longer have Charter Cable. Constant problems with fees for no reason. My Dish never has any problems when it storms I always get a signal. The only time There was a problem was when Saint Louis was hit with those two big storms over the summer. I sadly have Charter for an internet connection but its better than dial up. I can't get yahoo anything else out where I live.

I've finally had enough....My charter cancellation is due for this week! never had dish but going to give it a try now! Can't get any worse the way I look at it!

I have Direct T.V. and its pretty good. I did have Dish network and there was always problems. We even had to help the guy install because he didn't have the right tools with him.

I called AT&T for a different reason today, and for once when the guy tried to up-sell me - to DSL - it worked. (They even have a special promotion for people switching from cable internet. ; ) ) Hopefully it will be a better experience than I had with SBC DSL a few years ago... It definitely can't be worse than Charter.

I've cancelled the Charter auto-payment, and the only service we will have left with them shortly will be basic cable at $12/month. At least now if they triple-charge me at some random moment, I'll see it on a paper bill and it'll only be $36. :-\

Really? I'm gonna have to look into that.

Yep. When you get your final cable bill, you send them a copy along with a form AT&T provides, and you get a credit back to your account for 3 months' worth of free DSL, about $75. Also they waived the activation fee, and the $50 DSL modem comes with a $50 mail-in rebate. The only cost is $13 for shipping the equipment to you.

The DSL is $24.99/month forever (my Charter internet had just gone up to $45/month). That is for 3 megs; AT&T also has a 6-meg option, which the guy claims is "the fastest you will find in residential service" for $34.99, which would still be cheaper than Charter. I'm trying the 3-meg first though.

So, all of you that have DSL have The Dish I'm assuming? How much is your service for internet and satellite? I want to switch too. :)

Dish Network called me last night. This guy's english was so bad, he completely butchered my last name to start out with - I have a one syllable last name. I'm not sure if it was India or Pakistan or where he was calling from. After listening to him chew up the language a little more, I told him I wasn't interested and then hung up. Afterwards I thought about it and wondered how it was they were calling me when I'm on the no call list. I haven't done any business with them.

my brother in law and a buddy of his started there own business install wireless internet no phones or cable needed website is wisperisp.com, and they also themselves install dishnetwork. Most other companies make you wait on waiting list they come out in a couple of days and hook it up.

see that deal no tv switch from cable get dsl for 3 months free or something like that, than you can get phone and dish through them also you save money on each package beats charter. specially when it comes to emergency last year when power went out from storms neighbors who had charter internet and phone and cable service all came to our house so they could use phone since phone lines were not out. PLus i got 6mb service through att for 28 bucks a month thats cheap.

Creve Coeur deal puts AT&T's foot in Missouri TV door
By Jerri Stroud
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Friday, Nov. 17 2006

AT&T's video franchise agreement with Creve Coeur puts the company in position
to deliver a bundle of telephone, television and high-speed Internet services
over its own network for the first time in Missouri.

The company won't say whether Creve Coeur would be the first city in Missouri
to get the fiber-based service, which currently is available only in San
Antonio, AT&T's headquarters city.

The company says it will offer the service, called Uverse, in 15 cities by the
end of the year and more broadly early next year. Houston is the only city
among the 15 where AT&T has confirmed plans to offer Uverse.

AT&T spokesman Kerry Hibbs said the company is negotiating with more than 100
cities in Missouri, including St. Louis and Kansas City, to obtain franchises
for video service, which would make its television offering more comparable to
cable services.

But what AT&T really would like to see is a state law that would allow it to
get a statewide video franchise. A bill allowing a statewide franchise stalled
earlier this year in the Legislalture. AT&T has obtained statewide franchises
in Texas, California, Indiana and Kansas.

Cindy Brinkley, AT&T's Missouri president, said, "We expect another bill will
be introduced for the 2007 session, and Congress is looking at national video
legislation as well. In the meantime, it's great to see cities such as Creve
Coeur take the initiative to open the door to competition."

Sen. John Griesheimer, R-Washington, is planning to pre-file a statewide
franchise bill next month in Jefferson City. Greisheimer, who sponsored the
bill that died earlier this year, said he is trying to get cable and telephone
companies to agree on language for the new bill.

Telephone and cable companies are battling for dominance in providing bundles
of service to homes and small businesses. The bundles usually combine
telephone, high-speed Internet and subscription television services in a
discounted package. In some cases, cell phone service is included in the bundle.

AT&T's Uverse delivers high-speed Internet service and television over
fiber-optic lines, which provide higher speed and reliability than its copper
network.

In San Antonio, Uverse packages range from $74 to $119 a month, including
high-speed Internet service. The packages have 190 to more than 300 channels,
movies and other programs available on-demand, digital music and other options
including movie and sports packages. Customers who get AT&T telephone service
and Cingular Wireless cell phones can qualify for additional discounts.

In Creve Coeur, Charter Communications Inc. objected to the AT&T franchise
because it doesn't regulate AT&T as a cable company, said Sharifah Williams, a
spokeswoman for Charter. "We don't have a problem with competition," Williams
said. But the AT&T franchise "gives them an upper hand."

Hibbs said AT&T's service wouldn't be regulated as cable service because it
works differently. The company will provide government and public-access
channels under the Creve Coeur agreement Charter said they are
not playing on a level playing field since they are not regulated the same as
the cable operators.
