I Hate Plexiglass

Last weekend, I bought a big sheet of 0.25" thick plexiglass to make baffles for my sump.

Lesson learned #1: Don't use a jigsaw even with a fine blade -- as soon as the blade would pass, the plexiglass would simply melt right back together leaving a rough, ugly seam. After destroying half of what I had bought :mad2:, I went back to the store to get advice. I wound up buying a special scoring blade which did the trick on the first baffle, but I was amazed at how quickly the blade dulled and became moderately useless.

Lesson learned #2: Pay the extra money for the store to cut the plexiglass to the size you need. Since my first attempt at dealing with plexiglass was fairly pathetic, some of the baffles turned out pretty poorly with uneven edges. I was able to clean them up a little with a rotary tool but they were still ugly .

I siliconed the baffles in place in the 30G glass tank and they actually looked pretty good - skimmer section on the left with the traditional bubble trap, return in the center, and refugium on the right.

Now for my question...

It turns out that the refugium section has a leak and the water leaks out to the return area before the water can reach the top and spill over through the eggcrate I have siliconed in place. I drained it once and tried to resilicone, but I had the same problem much to my surprise (I used a good amount of silicone to avoid having the problem). Since I am pretty disgusted with the whole thing now, I am thinking about just dropping a bunch of sand in the refugium, some rubble rocks, and some chaeto and calling it a day. My thought is that sand will at the very least slow the leak and may potentially stop it in time once the sand gets lodged in whatever small gap exists. Worst case scenario, it keeps leaking but the refugium still serves its purpose.

Thoughts?

Although i have no experience with this, i heard that you cant use silicone on Plexi Glass, correct me if i am wrong. Your best bet would be to go to a glass shop and have them cut the baffles for you, you could probably get exact measurements for what you want here on RC.

Good Luck.

Thats The issue.....Plexi vs. silicone=you lose. Cut them out and come in and I'll cut you some glass.
Ive never had issues with plexi-glass baffles......many ppl do it :D However glass does take to silicone better....

I heard about the challenges of siliconing plexiglass to glass, but it seems people do it all the time. I actually do have 0.25" glass that Linda was gracious enough to donate but it was too wide to fit in the tank. Maybe getting a few pieces cut would be the best bet.

Live and learn.

Do you have any future plans for the sump/ tank? If not you can drain it. Take a razor blade and scrape the existing mess of silicone. Install the baffle and use two part epoxy down the seam and then add a bead of silicone over it to be sure eveything seals. No leaks then.

hahaahahahahahahaahahahhahhahahh !

ps: hahahahahah !

a sucker born every minute :p

yeah, Plexi = bad idea for sumps. Best bet is to get glass cut, and then grind the sharp edges so they are smooth and won't slice your hands/ arms.

Plus glass is easier to clean.

You certainly wouldn't want to silicone together an acrylic tank, but for sump baffles its fine. I've taken apart a few old ones and its damn difficult!

If you have access to a router its the easiest way to cut plexi.

This is a good idea. Scrape out the old, silicone will not stick to silicone. even if you glob it up enough so it dosen't leak right now it probably will in time.

plexiglass is fine for sump baffels, make sure there is silicone on both sides, and it will hold, no problem. Silicone can be a pain to work with some times, just make sure it is spread evenly over the joints and you should not have a problem. I use an auto body fill spatula that I cut to spread it. you can finfd them in walmart in the automotive section by the bondo. they are like $1.24 for 3. here is a pic of how I cut mine.

Thanks for the replies. I drained all the water from the sump and took out the baffle for the refugium and scraped off all the remaining silicone. The baffle was pretty jagged along one edge due to the crappy job I did cutting/scoring/breaking it. Rather than try to reuse it, I am going to use one of the pieces of glass I have available for that one baffle (I need to get it ground down about 1/8" though). Since the other baffles were working fine on the bubble trap side, I decided to leave those alone. If it ain't broke, don't fix it :).
