I hate protein skimmers.

Buy what you can afford and what's best for your tank and on your budget.

IMO the high-end protein skimmers are luxury items. It's nice to have, but there are others that can do the same job. If you can't afford one then don't get one. Geesh.

I agree with "Buy what you can afford"! I just bought my Octo Extreme 300 because I couldn't see spending the REDICULOUS $1000+++ on a BIG "name brand" skimmer again. This is my 3rd skimmer in 2 years because I thought "name brand" makes it a better skimmer! "Name" doesn't make it work, "technology" does. Technology changes constantly so it's hard to keep up. I just realized that if a "Needlewheel skimmer with a Diffuser Plate" is the current technology that works, why not buy it for less money? The "BIG name" people will come out with something "New and Improved" next week and of course, everyone else will follow, but at better prices. "Penny wise, pound foolish" This has been a painfully expensive journey for me as well!

Ding Ding Ding.:D

a pretty ignorant statement

just because you wanna make yourself feel better about buying a $600+ skimmer doesnt mean you have to bash other brands that are proven and cheaper.

The 600 PLus skimmer is far better quality than the Chinese copies that just copy, they don't have a clue about skimming.
Sure they are making better skimmers but again just copies that almost cost as much as the real thing.

i use a coralife 220 on my 150 gal mixed reef it works great. it only costs 200 new and if it breaks i can buy a new 1 for dirt cheep. get what you can afford. just make sure there are parts available if it breaks. heck run 2 cheep skimmers .redundant system .

Hmm... i am assuming that the more you say it the better it makes you feel?

I've used ASMs, Euro Reefs, BKs, remoras, urchins, bubble magus, seaclones etc etc...

In the end, your (insert $$$$$ here) skimmer gets covered with fish crud. Have I noticed a difference between ASM and BK? Not really. ER and BK? Not really. Bubble magus and BK? Not really. Remora, seaclone, urchin vs. BK? Absolutely. Those three skimmers are pieces of ****.

Hi Don....

A good question... :-)

..your can buy a Massproduct, via Volkswagen.... or you can buy a imported, handmade Ferrari from Overseas...

What you think: ... with which car you have more Fun ?

best regards... Klaus

I wonder if you could use the pick up line, "Do you want to come back to my place? I have a $2000.00 skimmer in my sump. It is so much fun."?

Couple of things I have noticed.
1. most who own a top notch european skimmer don't buy new skimmers every year. that seems to be the biggest difference.
2. there seems to be some who cannot see the difference between high end named skimmers and economy skimmers but it is usually those who purchased the low end skimmer made by a high end brand. My guess is that the bristle's experience was with a BK mini. I could be way off but judging the quality of Royal Exclusiv's skimmers off of the BK mini is like judging Porsche when you just drove a 924.

Klaus - Volkswagens are fine cars! OK, so I own two so I am bias. I do have a questions though. Name one Ferrari that can stand up to the Ultimate VW. I think you know the Ultimate VW as the Veyron!

Regular ole EuroReef RS skimmers for me. Turn it on and 2 hours later on a new tank, it will skim consistantly forever. No overflows, no surprises. Bank on 2-3 inches of putrid skimmate every 3 days.

I know it still hurts those Ferrari drivers feelings when my blown C5 leaves them sitting still when we're already going 130mph:D I know it's still not a Ferrari, but the Ferrari is not as fast. I know some fast VWs with TT local too. R32s with TT is not to be messed with.
