Ok well i have a purple tang a yellow tang and a sailfin tank togetherin my 90 until my new tank gets here in about twoweeks. Any waythe yellow tang is about 1-2 inches and the sailfin and purple is 3-4. Today out of nowhere the purple tang tore up the yellow tang. I put the yellow in the sump and was wondering how i should stop this agression. Should i take the purple tang out and put the yellow tang backin or what? Thanks guys.

You have three tangs from the same genus, one known for aggressive behavior, in a tank that isn't big enough for one of them much less three. The aggression didn't come from out of the blue, this genus is hard wired to fight. I would keep the yellow in the sump if you want it to live a while longer. How do you stop the aggression? Start by making some appropriate livestock and tanksize selection. I dont know how big the new tank is but it will take a while to setup and condition the system and at the moment you have three Zebrasoma tangs in a tank that is way too small. I would return some of those fish until your new tank is setup and ready to go.

Well said....
I think he must be joking as nobody would waste money like that.

He's not joking. He's just very young, impulsive, and resistant to advice.

DMK, Please return two of the tangs until you've got your big tank set up. As Kahuna Tuna says, you'll get nothing but aggression with these three in a 90 gallon tank. It's not humane.

But the guys at my LFS said they'd be ok..

Seriously. A 90 gallon would make a great qt tank for these fish when your big tank arrives, but you can't have these 3 together in a tank that size and not expect deaths. GL

see like i said "a shark a dixie cup and a can of table salt with crayon reef written on it"
lets hope you arent out 8,000.00 trying that out

NOT lol but i have had this exp. and see it everywhere so many people getting bad info from lfs and wind up with non compatible set ups :headwally:

If your sump is at least the size of a 20 gallon long and you are getting at least a 180, either return the yellow to the lfs or keep it in the sump until the bigger tank is up and conditioned, and then introduce it first of the three tangs. You really will be better off establishing the bigger tank, introducing fish, and then adding your tangs last.

I don't think the aggression will stop. You have three similar looking tangs in a tank that is too small to house all three of them. IMO it is best to get the tank going before buying fish for it. I bought two clowns for my 125 back in Nov. they aren't in the tank yet and I am thinking of going bigger. This means they have spent a lot of time in the holding/QT tank and they were supposed to be in after cycling was finished.

If the section of the sump is pretty big then I would say you could leave it in there until things are set up and running well, but I would also want to say that two of the tangs should be returned until you can put them in your big tank. Even when you get the big tank set up I feel that the tank needs to age some before a tang should be added so they have a little bit of algae to graze on, JMO.

I am not trying to be mean or anything, just giving you advice.

Also, you can't just establish the bigger tank and put the 3 tangs in as one or more of them likely will be aggressive to subsequently-introduced fish.

Yea, that's more than a bit of a problem. That purple tang will have the other 2 dead real soon. Do the right thing and get rid of the 2 u want the least. Set ur other tank up, let it cycle and add the fish u want, then add the tang u keep last....
Especially if its the purple tang u decide to keep.....
