I have a mantis in my tank

Hi there. I recently added some LR to my 55 gal and I have a mantis. I saw it today for the first time. I took a bottle and cut the top off and flipped it inside itself. I am getting ready to put some frozen krill in it and see how it goes. Will this work, or something else?

you gotta turn the lights out or else he wont go in the trap. i learned that the hard way with a feisty peppermint shrimp

Most Mantis Shrimp are active during daylight hours.
Peppermint shrimp come out at night.

I got quite a few mantis with my 200 lbs of TBA rock. I found that they were no problem as juveniles and stayed in their holes eating whatever came there way. Once they reached adulthood you would see them venturing out which is when they are easy to catch. I was never aware of them bothering anything in the tank but I hand fed them thawed frozen shrimp.

so how does one find out if its a pistol shrimp or a mantis shrimp if it wont come out of its hole? would a pistol come out to get food?

You could always put your finger in the hole. I'm betting you would know pretty quick if it's a mantis or a pistol :).

Actually I do have a better idea. Get a skewer and put that in the hole. If you here the popping but don't feel anything hitting the skewer then you have yourself a pistol shrimp. As they pop by forcing water out of a chamber. If it's a mantis he will most likely hit the skewer making to make noise but you should be able to feel it.
