I have a new Hippo tang that has trouble

I got this charity case fish yesterday and I'd like to know what can help him...

Wow poor thing..best you can do is feed a real variety of food..and keep your water pristine..about all you can do..good luck!

what Sandra said. that's gonna be a tough one. keep a close eye out for bacterial and fungus infections. clean water, lots of good food.

What fish food has a good source of vitamin C? I wish it was delicious bubble algae. LOL

I tried posting this the other night when you started this thread but my internet went out right when I hit submit reply lol...
so I hope this can help you now..correct me if I'm mistaken from my view of the photo the fish looks like he has fin rot ( this I say due to the greyish coloration of the side fins if they had been chewed off they would not be discolored this way IME)this I would treat with melafix use as directed for 7 days..
other things I notice was signs of HLLE this I determined due to the pitting and discoloration of the body in areas and behind the head area of what I can see in the photo...
this I would treat with nutrition and supplements
dry food wise I would do 3-4 feeding daily with spectrum thera+A pellets
I would also add a frozen variety in for a PM feeding this I would alternate daily between the 2 brands .. emerald entrese, formula 2
soak the frozen foods in a combination of selcon (its omega 3 and fatty acids,marine limpids)and garlic extreme(vit C)... you may not be able to eliminate the scars of HHLE but with this diet and proper water conditions you should be able to stop the progression of it

this is exactly how I would treat this fish if it were in my tank..
ps I avoid the use dried seaweed of any type .. with the foods listed above you will find its not needed.... however I do give it as a treat when I want to watch the fish play seaweed football( its cheep entertainment lol)about once every 2 months lol..
also with this diet you will have very happy fat fish

I am feeding Thera-A and Prime 2. Our FMAS president is a chef and makes his own food. He uses all the goodies mentioned above, except he dices fresh garlic. I've got a few of his packages and feed a good mix.

As for the fin rot, I am going to hold off just a bit since the LFS told me that the tail that was shredded and seemed to be regenerating instead of getting worse.

Can Melafix be used in a reef aquarium safely or do the fish have to be moved to a quarantine tank.

Melafix imo is worthless..would just do what you are doing for now..keep in mind that a lot of the damage may be permanent, I have a yellow tang with no top fin because when I adopted him he was in such bad shape.

yes melafix is reef and invert safe as for being useless I keep it on hand always.. just turn off you skimmer and if you happen to use carbons take them out.. it may tick your corals off when first dosing but they get over it .. I also use this product as a stress relief for all new fish for 3 days.. as for pimafix this is completely useless unless used in conjunction with melafix.. simple wounds and fin rot melafix works well ...IME
