well guys i finally did it. i ordered my pinnacle fish today. on thursday afternoon i should be the proud new owner of a vanuatu supermale mysteri wrasse. im so anxious, is it thursday yet?!?!?!?! ill post pics when he comes in. im not one to usually name fish but i think "sherlock" will be fitting for him :) <~~~steve

edit: special thanks go out to sean at emerald bay for busting his a$$ to source this thing for me. from what i understand this isnt exactly the plentiful season for mysteri's and theyre not to plentiful even at the right time of the year. he really pulled through on this one!

i wish it was thursday guys! after i get the mystery im going to look for a c. boylei :) (just jokin on that one.... i dont have 7k to spend on a fish that most likely will wither away) im just hoping the mysteri actually comes in....... <~~~steve

regal angels are one of the most beautiful fish in the world imo. please dont hesitate to post pics for me!!!!! EB had a beauty about a month ago that was eating like a pig but i passed on it. i wish i didnt now!!!!

whats the difference between the wrasse your getting and this one they have at marine depot? im starting to really like the wrasse's to but couldnt find anything when i did a search for avanuatu supermale mysteri wrasse. Thanks

heres what i know about mysteri's.... one, theres not many pics because people have a problem paying 300 bucks with shipping for a tiny fish that almost looks like a sixline. (it doesnt too me, but that seems to be the general concensus) also i know that mysteri's are collected in 3 places, mostly hawaii, an ocassional in vanuatu, and rarely in australia (barrier reef area) the hawaiin has the more pronounced white 5 bar vertical stripe coloration where as from what i am told the vanuatu has a deeper violet color instead of being washed out and having more of a emerald green belly and lower jaw when matured. they also supposedly have a more pronounced yellow face and the white "skull pattern" to the face is more of a metallic sheen. i cant source a picture so we'll truly see tommorow. ive only personally seen hawaiin's and theyre still gorgeous. a few vanautu owners claim that the fish has a little more aggressive temperment than the hawaiin counterpart. they still consider all of them peaceful/borderline semi-aggressive. i just want the fish to compete for food instead of cringing at the site of other wrasses. this is actually a very easy fish to care for unlike most high $$$$ fish. they cost alot due to being collected at 100-140 feet down and they are very rare in the wild.also to ship them they go in a HUGE bag with about 10 gallons of water and take up a whole shipping box $$. this shipping method seems standard from most suppliers/online vendors ive spoken to, hence the 80 dollar shipping. im ok with that to ensure the fishes survival. i dont want something this rare coming out the ocean unless i can provide a top notch environment for it. in my opinion its one of the "pinnacle" wrasses in the same gusto of a pyle's, or rhomboid, or lineatus fairies, this one is just a possum wrasse instead. he will be the king of this 75. i cleared it out and his only tankmate is a small lubbocks fairy wrasse and a shrimp. ill keep you posted on my experiences!<~~~steve

pitbull, i searched through my pic database i have saved and think i found a few. the first is the hawaiin which has the more pronounced 5-bar pattern.

and heres a marshall/van. mysteri. it only shows the bars when stressed or showing aggression and notice the more green tinge to the fish. its a bad pic but the only one ive found in about a year!

thanks for all the info. I really like the vanuatu . my wife would kill me if i spent that much on a fish but if i can get a side job in this spring then i could do it. Id just say i got paid less for the job then what i really did and tell her the fish was only 20 bucks lol. well good luck with yours and ill be watching for the pics.

Shame on you Steve!!!!!!!! Now look what you've done to me, I got me a wrasse today, my first and the beginning of wrasse obsession..........

thanks, pending that the supplier is sure that he had the fish it should be enroute later this afternoon. im hoping its really a marshall. if its a hawaiin i wont be complaining either, ive just always wanted any variation of the fish. also the online prices are a joke, talk to sean, its not a cheap fish by any means but its not a 300 dollar fish either. im not disclosing what i paid, and its not like i got it for 100 either but ive seen websites want as much as 320+ ship for this fish which is price gouging imo. <~~~steve

mike, be prepared for many late nights of searching for them and talking to a guy who knows a guy in canada who has a friend in mexico that know someone in the marshalls that can get you a rhomboid pair.....etc. be very prepared my friend, its about to hit you :) <~~~steve

edit: what kinda wrasse did you get?

robert, im not sure.... i dont think anyone is due to lack of interest/study. judging from past experiences i would say 6" max but thats just a guess. it was never a huge fish girth wise either. its body was similar to a freshwater arowana if youre familiar with those, just with a wrasses face on it. it was very slender. unfortunatly mine fell victom to a huge LTA i had so it was banished back to the store along with everything else that would even potentially pose the most minor threat to my mysteri. aka, i know have a 75 gallon with a mandarin, a 2" lubbocks fairy wrasse and a coral banded shrimp. im restocking with only rarer fish now for the visual impact/self enjoyment. next on the list is a candy hogfish (still technically a wrasee though :) ) hth<~~~steve

hey steve, what kind of fish is that in your avatar. Im fish species illiterate. having mostly nanos i never got into to many fish.

thats a sohal tang, unbelivable beauty but a BAD BAD temper. ive never owned one myself but marvel at their beauty. its the same fish used in the reef central logo at the top left of youre screen.

BAD NEWS ON THE WRASSE GUYS! well its not coming after all....... the wholesaler called and said that his specimens werent up to par. i give the guy credit for being open and honest and i think that was a real classy move on his part to not send it. ill eventually run across a good one. anywho, im going wrasse huntin tommorow :) <~~~steve

Definately a cool decision from the supplier. I'd keep an eye on your smaller Cirrhilabrus
if your going with a supermale size mysteri. I've read they can go both ways as far as aggression towards other wrasse.

Steve, I can see about getting one in, we get them fairly regularly. They are from the Marshall's occasionally Hawaii. I've seen 6 or so I'd say Richard has one. They can be very mean tho, real bullies as far as wrasses go. ^^ We have a Sohal @ the store now too if you need one =] and a few clown tangs. I'll have to check on pricing. I'll PM you with more details as I get them.
