I have to move my tank

The good news is that it's because I'm moving back home after a 2 year hiatus. The bad news is I have to greatly disturb my happy little community. It's a 55 gallon tank that has to go down stairs and travel about 2 miles. I'm really dreading this. Any pearls of wisdom?

Hvae plenty of buckets! And try to save as much of the established water as possible. And take your time. Good luck.

I used a couple of new Rubbermaid trash cans with the wheels on and handles on them. They run about $20 each. I needed new ones anyway... these ones clip the lids on so dogs ,racoons ,ect can't just knock them over and wreak havoc.

Do not worry to much . It is not so difficult , if you not have Jaubert or DSB.

I've had to do this a couple of times, my only advice would be make a list of what to do in order to minimize corals and fishes time in bags. Also to disturb the sand as little as possible.

Yeah, I've been in the planning stages for weeks now but still feel like I'm jumping off a cliff. It's the stairs that are going to make this so difficult. I've got feather worms, a tube anemone and a clam so I'll have to keep a minimum amount of water in the tank. But how much are my friend and I going to be able to carry? This sucks. Does anybody have a transporter that can beam my tank over?

I moved the livestock from a 120 to a 180 more than 150 miles in one afternoon a few months ago, not a single loss. I had tanks and coolers and buckets. coolers work well plus they have handles on the ends. I actually didn't reuse much of the water. just make sure you have plenty of made up salt water already at the new place and at temp. you won't have to worry about aeration or heating with that short of a ride. It is going to be messy, but you'll get through it. I did.

You shouldnt lift a tank with any amount of water in it

Tanks aren't meant to sustain the weight they do with motion so you would be playing a dangerous risk by doing this.

I just moved my tank recently and it was the same size as yours with no casualties.

My advice is transfer all your water and live rock in buckets/containers and I started up a new sandbed and seeded it with some of the old sand.

I really didn't want to use all that old sand for fear of the consequences for stirring it up!

I don't think three inches of water or less would hurt - except it won't be fun on the stairs - try to keep the tank level - and if it were me - water or not - I would put the tank on plywood to help take stress off of uneven handling

hire a tank babysitter from your lfs to help on the half day project

I did it a couple of months ago with a friends tank with no problems. We moved it with the sand bed undisturbed and every thing else in buckets.
