I just cut it.......

Ok, did a little research and watched a few videos. I have a 3-4 inch Blue mushroom. I wanted to propagate this one and hopefully have a few more. I saw a couple of different ways and decided to try cutting it into quarters but leaving it attached to the rock it's on. It's supposed to split the rest of the way and the 4 quarters will move away from each other and form 4 seperate shrooms....
I sure hope this works.....This is my first attempt.

The other way I read is to sever the head and then cut into quarters and then mesh them down in some substrate. Then a new shroom will grom on the stem and the four quarters will each form another....

What have you experienced with these???

I've done both and had good results both ways. Mushrooms are generally pretty much bulletproof. Once in awhile I'll have one of the pieces slim up and kind of rot away, I have to suspect this was due to not enough water flow.

Thanks Despot. I am really excited to be doing some of this on my own and already have a tile saw sitting around. Thinking that it's going to be hard to cut up some of the more expensive ones but think it may be a good way to trade for more and be able to fill my tank up with multiple corals. I am surprised at how easy it "looks" but you know how that works.....LOL

Thanks again.

Here are a couple of pics of the mushroom 24 hours after I cut it. It's receding and beginning to move apart.

I so apologize to those of you watching this. I work 4 on and 4 off so my days are long plus third shift.....

Anyway, here is the update and a couple of pics.

After about 5 days the mushroom still had not moved apart as I was expecting. At about day 7 it was almost totally back together. It did look like a flower where I had cut it, it had four petals. So now here I am with the same mushroom that I had before.. Well, at least I didn't kill it.

I will try again only this time I may try another method.

Going to give it a few days to a couple weeks to recover.......

Here are the pics......

Yea, I think I may cut it off the stalk this time, cut the disk into 1/4's and then mesh it down to a small piece of LR I have. That's the other way i saw to get them to propagate.

I have heard of them coming back together if still close but I have never seen a picture. Amazing these creatures are.
