coral is having a hard time. My sps was doing great, now, its not doing so hot. I am having a hard time with this algae that is sticking to the coral, bleaching it out. its a brownish red algae. Some is on my sandbed in the corners of the tank and then on my SPS. All of my LPS is doing really good. How can I get rid of this? I have lots of current. I dont understand why its not leaving. Every new SPS coral I put in there, it grows on it.

Thanks,

Josh

have you checked your water?

algae usually blooms like that even when theres a TEENY bit of garbadge in there...try cutting back some of the light but for too long

i bought this RED SLIME remover...for the same problem...it took care of it AMAZINGLY and left my zoas gorgonian feather duster and star polyps alone without harming them

the downside is after using it i was told that this red slime killer hurt some of the beneficial bacteria in my sandbed but i havent seen any effects of it yet.

ive heard sucess with using red slime remover as well..
it worked somewhat with me..
your phos could be reading 0 because the algae is consuming it i your tank..
do you keep up on water changes and how established is the tank?

how could I add more oxygen to my tank...i know that red slime doesnt like oxygen

powerful skimmer?
water agitation and movment...thats what i know but maybe im wrong

The skimmer isnt the best...it does work. It's a danner skilter (skimmer and filter in one). Do you think this could be part of it? Is there a better skimmer that would hang on the back?

everyone on review websites say remora...but ive learned trough personal experience...to not buy one again....

ive heard alot of people say the bak-pak is a pretty decent HOB skimmer

also you want to do research on this because i dont know about it bUT!

aquatraders.com (and many will tell you to stay away from them) sells a bak-pak clone...with a built in refugium for half the price.

again id look it up first but it looks tempting.

I would also get more flow throughout your tank. Throw a Koralia 1 in there, or 2 Koralia 1's for an extra punch..

I have a # 3 in there...with a crumy walmart kind. Thats what's buggin me so much. It seems like i have everything I need. I do a 3 gallon water change every sunday. grrrr. I wonder if its cause its not drilled and its a small tank.

hahah AHHH!

well i think you just told us why this is happening.

are you using TAP water?

no, but I feel its just as good. I have been using the water at walmart (RO machine). It did read 15 on my buddies RO/DI unit. His water reads 2. I am going to start using his water, see if that does anything.

Thanks,

Josh...thanks for all of your help

A tds reading of 15 is still a good reading. What have the temps been getting to lately? I know my tank at home has been running warm lately and Ive noticed some cyano start popping up here and there.

your phosephate will most likely always read 0 as the algae uses it up as fast as it get's in the tank.

what are your other parameters (numbers please)

do they stay stable? if not how much do they swing from day to day?

oh nevermind i use walmart RO aswell i thought maybe you used regular tap.

how long has your tank been set up?

You most likely have high nutients whether your test kits are confiorming that or not. A Skilter just isn't going to cut it for a protein skimmer when it comes to most SPS. Also, a 10ish percent water change weekly with such a poor skimmer isn't helping matters. Either upgrade your skimmer or start doing higher percentage water changes. Also, what are your nitrate, calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity levels?

Hey,

My cal stays about 420, alk 9-10, i have 5 in nitrates. I do wonder if its the skilter. Im really wondering if I should try the hang on back skimmer/fug from aquatraders. What do you think. O my lights are from them. 30" system with one metal hal,2 pcs, and LED's. I changed my bulb to a 14k phenox.
