i just got a pair of black and white ocellaris clowns and want to breed them.

and where can i get a good rotifer culture? and alot of people talk about rotifers with green water.........what does that mean?
 
green water is just water with a butload of phytoplankton in it which gives the water a green color. you can find phyto and rotifers online, i dont know any sites off hand because i just get mine from my schools aquaculture facility.

as for a sponge filter, if they didnt know what one is i am afraid they must be new to the hobby, at some point in their experience they should have heard of one.

ok thanks! i'm going to start my rotifer culture in the next week or 2. about how long do i have to wait before my clowns start spawning?
 
when ever you first see them showing signs ( clearing off a spot on the rocks near the anemone, increased territoriality, decreased roaming, and tones of other signs.) but you say you just got yours not too long ago, right? i dont think you have to worry about them spawning for quite some time. give me a guesstimation on what size the clowns are, this could give a rough estimation of how old they are, but im sure that you dont even have sexually mature clowns yet.
 
the female is about 1 3/4 inches. and the male is about 1 1/4. they haven't calmed down since i got them. they still keep swimming back and fourth by the front top of the tank. is this normal?
 
i think it may be normal, some are just hyper, the guy on the floor above me has clowns that will not stay in one spot for more than two seconds they are constantly on the move. your clowns are most likely not going to spawn for a while, with the slight size difference, if it is a female,she has only just changed. prepare to wait, this will take a while.
 
ok idk if this is whats happening but people say they will clean off a spot before they spawn. well i have a broken piece of clam shell in the tank and they seem to be picking stuff off of it and fanning the area. idk if i'm just being to optimistic or something. is there any chance they could be getting ready to spawn this early?
 
i guess anything is possible but i would doubt it. what are you feeding them athe parameters stay?nd how often? how is your water and how constant do
 
my water params are great but nitrates are at 40. i'm getting them down with some chaeto and a protein skimmer but everything seems great atm. if they are cleaning the spot would the male or female be guarding it? my male is guarding the spot but the female comes and helps two. they switch while one cleans it.
 
do a water change that will hep with the nitrates more than a skimmer will. both will guard, do you have a picture of this? i would like to see, but with your nitrates being at 40 i dont think they would find that optimal, it would definitely cause a bad spawn.

and what are the specific measurements of your water?
 
ammonia 0, ph 8.2, nitrite 0, nitrate 40 again. and i think i was just being optimistic because they stopped cleaning it. they started swimming around the tank again. i will get pics when they do it again.
 
what about salinity, calcium and other trace element sfor your corals. this has nothing to do with the fish just curious. but yea, im sure you just got a little ahead of your self, it would be rare for them to start spawning after a big move to a new tank.
 
ok my calcium is 380 and salinity is 1.023. i don't have test kits for the other stuff but i ordered them yesterday. what will it look like when they are mating? like when they are making the eggs in her belly not laying them. what are signs of them getting ready to spawn? i'm just curious so i can have the tank ready.
 
you should get your calcium up to 420, 450 at most i would say, and salinity up to 1.025-6. the female will have an extremely swollen stomach when she is gravid. they will exhibit as before nest clearing, increased territoriality, the male may do a few more submissive dances than usual to try to get the female "in the mood" and then she will lay the eggs and the male will go over the eggs and fertilize them. dont worry about trying to save your first batches, you can use that time to time your rotifer cultures down and find the best techniques that work for you. i didnt start trying to save my true percs batches until the second month of them laying, i made sure i had everything right. they will lay eggs every two weeks, or maybe even sooner once they actually start to spawn.

what are you feeding and how often?
 
i feed frozen brine and marine s pellets. i feed four times a day. i drop 2 pellets in at a time and if they eat them i keep giving them more. and i do the same with the brine.
 
replace the brine with mysis, and get a better variety of foods. brine shrimp dont do **** for fish unless they are vitamin enriched and even then i wouldnt feed them to my fish. your schedule sounds good with the feeding. i feed mine mysis, squid, clams, shrimp, and silversides. i occasionally feed them live fish larvae as well to give them the thrill of chasing the food, the clowns love it just as much as my neon dottyback.
 
where can i get fish larvae? and how small do you cut the clams,shrimp,silversides,squid, etc.
i tried squid but he didn't take it. can i put all of those in a blender and then freeze them into cubes? and then feed them that? or is it better to feed them regular? it's just hard for me to afford all the food and stuff because i'm only 14.
 
well if you are willing to pay the price for snowflake clowns you should be willing to pay for the food, this hobby is expensive, very expensive and with three tanks, you may have dung yourself into a deep hole. you can just blend it up and freeze, that is one of the easiest ways, and if you do that you can add vitamins and other beneficial goodies for them into the mixture. the fish larvae, even though i may get thrashed for this, i just catch when i go fishing. whe the bite is slow, i just look around the docks and catch with a dipnet and even when im in the boat , i catch tiny sardines and glass minnows. i usually put them in aerated and filtered bucket in my room for a week with daily water changes to make sure they are clean, but im not too worried about them getting sick.
 
sorry but more questions about the food. when i blend them together exactly what vitamins and other beneficial stuff should i put in? after i freeze the food how should i feed it to them? and how much of it? and as for catching fish larvae i live in connecticut but i go to the ocean when it's warm once a week. but there's nothing in the area of ocean i go to when it's cold. and even when its warm i only find crabs and sometimes shrimp. what areas should i look for to find baby fish? and when i catch the larvae what should i feed them?
