I love my new haddoni

Here is the very first resident of my new tank. Doest it clone itself like BTA? And will the color change?

That's an interesting looking thing, isn't it just a type of carpet anemone?

Well if it clone itself I get first dibs! :D

Hi Dannie, yes it is a carpet anemone -- Stychodactyla haddoni anemone. My next goal would be to find a red one.

Not really. The canopy and lighting are not mounted on the tank yet. I'm just using a single 24W PC temporarily.

Hopefully you get the light on there soon. I don't think you anemone like the 24W PC too much :D ..

Very nice piece man.. I wish I have a tank big enough for those :)

IIRC haddoni are the most light needy and the hardest to keep, but I don't really know that much about them... I don't think we will ever have one in our tank due to their well earned reputation as "dirty fish eaters" :D

But that is a pretty sweet looking nem Perry :)

They are not known to clone; but, you can cut them in half.

Calfo says that it's a standard way to propagate them. I have 2; but, I don't have the desire to cut mine. The color may change depending on your lighting.

Was it in sand when you bought it? They say they don't have to be; but, the last one I picked up was and he buried his foot right away (I put a container of sand under him). The other one I have likes to be in the rocks.

Best of luck,

Roy

Thanks for the post Roy. I don't think I'll be cutting my haddoni soon. I got too many expensive fish in my tank that I don't think I'll be able to catch if something goes wrong.

Sparss, I just could not past the chance of getting it when I saw this thing last Thursday. When I saw it last Thursday I look at it for almost 15mins and then left the LFS thinking that my tank is not ready for it but I came back the following day and pick it up.

Elite, Don't worry my tank will have the MH by saturday.

Someone should just put in here that this is NOT A RECOMMENDED FIRST ADDITION to a reef tank. Of course, I don't know your situation, and really I don't have time to find out or i'd ask, but because newcomers read these forums someone needs to put this in for future newbies looking up carpets anems.

Happy reefing:)

I know it is just me, and my anti-nem mentality, but having "haddoni" and "expensive fish" in the same sentence, much less the same tank, just strikes me as a bit contradictory :D. The majority of carpet nems that are up FS from fellow reefers are most commonly because the nems ate 1 or more of the previous owners favorite fish or because they coudn't keep it alive/healthy.

where did you read that info?

IIRC the carpet nems are the hardest to keep and as such require a very mature (IE: stable) tank, with limitied to no swings in parms... that is pretty much the opposite of most newly setup tanks. How long has yours been cycled ?

IME I have more success keeping carpet anemone than fish. I even had one of those mini carpet that just multipled like crazy even in the worses parm were fish and corals don't survive. I end up nuking the tank just to get rid of them. I don't see why worry when they hardy.

My 375g tank has been cycled for about 2 mos now. My tangs including my pair of japanese swallow tail angel started to get ick after I added more livestocks (15" giga clam, foxface rabbit, purple tang and a show size dussumeiri) but the the neon carpet anem is still as brilliant as it was. When I turned on my ozone reactor the ick is gone after 2 days.

Please don't tell me you killed a carpet anemone because you didn't like it's color.

There is always someone willing to house a critter and take it off your hands.

Best of luck,

Roy

I use to have the brown haddoni carpet too that I bought from LGA. Didn't like the color and it got nuke too.

I think he is talking about his tank crash last year.
