I love my tunzes ...but... 6000, 6100 question

I love my Tunzes ...but... I don't speak Tunze.. it is like a whole new language. turns out I took someone at they're word about a set of 6100s I bought a while back.

the problem started when I noticed that 3 X 6045 and 2 X 6100 were not quite getting it in my new 180 gallon reef. I was not getting good surface agitation let alone any wave action and ended up pressing an old modded maxijet back into service.

so I am weighing my options, and my budget, looking for a flow solution when in the course of my investigation i find out BAM! I have 6000s

now i am looking for the transformers to upgrade my 6000s to 6100s but I am somewhat confused and want to make sure as mistakes in buying Tunze equipment can be costly

from what I have gathered, I have 7210.202a transformers and all I need to do is find 7410.602 transformers.

is there anything else I should do at the same time? I understand that there is a newer propeller design available, can I upgrade to that or anything else

That is all you need. As far as the drive units, they are sort of continually evolving, about every 6 months I see something has changed most changes are very minor and usually are either done to simplify production or make the pump quieter. The 6100.70 is the current drive unit, if you have older 6100.60's in good shape I see no real reason to change but you could upgrade and keep the old ones for spares.

thanks Roger,

by drive unit, I am assuming the "magic box" how about the impeller, is there an upgrade for that?

can I order parts directly from Tunze or is there a good online retailer to go to, my LFSs are not up to speed when it comes to Tunze

the impeller is the same unless you have a very old pump which has the brown color. If your impeller has the brake shoes on it, you can change to the new impeller which is 1 piece.

impeller = drive unit
silverbox = driver which there is no upgrade for

parts and such can be order from tunze.com and will ship from rogers facility

yea, they are brown... sort of like brown better than black.. I guess I will have to open them up and look for brake shoes ??? it this to keep it from spinning backwards?

I am starting to think $175 each was not all that great of a deal. is there a market for the smaller transformers?

would the new drive unit be 6100.700 ?

The brown is an older model which will have the brake shoes on the impeller. I believe the brake shoes help slow down the impeller between the interval

No really unless someone decided to down grade to 6000 from 6100 which is rare

You'll need the transformer not the drive unit. I am not sure the part number for 6100 transformer. If you read your user manual you should be able to find out.

I am currently on duty (24hrs), i have no access to Tunze.com or my tunze user manual.

thanks, I am starting to think it would be more economicly sound to buy a 6200 and sell a 6000. the upgrade with the drive units would be $240 shiped for both

Really? I thought the transformer only cost $75 each.... You don't have to change the impeller tho. Why fix something when it is not broken?

$81 each + $10 shipping, I can get a used 6200 for $350 shipped and sell a 6000 for $180

I heard that the new impeller gives a broader flow

I haven't heard that it gives a broader flow. AFAIK, the "new" impeller's advantage is that it's easier to clean (and cheaper to manufacture). It's also somewhat noisier than the "old" impeller. The flow pattern is dependent on the shroud, not the impeller. It *is* true though that a 6200 will have a broader flow than a 6000 or a 6100 (since the shroud opening is bigger).

thanks all, I went ahead and ordered a 6200, I am hoping that with a 6000 will be able to produce a decent wave in a 24 X 24 X 72 inch tank

I want to upgrade my 6000 to 6100 too, but I don't know if it is in the budget right at the moment. Will the 6100 transformer be in stock for a long time?

well I just got my hands on a 7410.602 transformer (after ordering a new 6200) and it makes a LOT more flow! I can say that now my pump makes a small humming sound, and you can hear the pitch change with the wave motion, does that mean it is time to clean it? how about cutting some of the fish gaurds, I have seen guys cut every other one

you can cut every other spoke? to get more flow, but you can also cut the nozzle/output down to make the flow wider. and lastly you can put a 6200 shroud on a 6100 for wider flow
