I Need SAND....

I have 80lbs of free crushed coral and that hasnt seemed to of left my garage! :lol:

Mike, I just want you to know before you make your decision, I would not take a chance on using any sand that it's composition is unknown. You are spending so much $ on this reef, do you really think it's worth the gamble. This decision is not like buying an undersized skimmer or lower wattage light. This will be a hard one to take back if it backfires.

Ive seen a ton of people use it on their reefs.

Then again your working on a 400g. Im pretty sure many people in the LARGE REEF FORUMS will help you out much more, I just dont want anyone to blame me, cuz I only had it in there for 6 months. I have no idea what can happen to it once its been sitting for 2+ years?

Greg, your right. It would be horrible if using some cheap sand backfires on me. I did some more research and it turns out that others have also used play sand even silica sand with no ill effects..according to my research i have learned that silicates dont leak into the tank unless there is a lot of pressure...aragonite is preffered cause of its buffering effects, and phosphates can be a problem when using sands that contain silica....

well, the sand Im considering is the Paragon Play Sand from Home Depot. According to the manufacturer this sand does not contain any silicates.
As far as buffering I plan on using a Kalk reactor along with a Calcium reactor to moderate PH
And, I will be using an ozone reactor along with a heafty skimmer which is known to help eliminate phosphates

So, if any of the possible complications do occur I have a back up plan. BUT, if anyone disagrees or knows otherwise then please chime in here. Thanks

Ok, its been some time already and I figured I will post my results with Home Depots Paragon Play Sand. To this day I have had no ill effects. The sand is sugar fine and looks great in my tank. I have not experienced any crazy algae blooms or anything else negative in that respect. So, Im giving the thumbs up and saying this sand is ok to use. You cant beat the price!!!
