Blizzard here in Vermont over a foot of snow still comming down. Been -22 here for over a week off and on . Will do it in spring . Richard i want to set live rock in my 75 gal . I'm on road for 3 days can i let tank run come home afer 3 days test and do what needs to be done as far as water change ? No one here to test with in the 3 days I'm gone. No way else to do this unless I wait till end of october and take two weeks vacation. What is amout of amonia we have to be concerned with in order to do a water change ? In a 75 what is ratio of amonia to amount of water that has to be changed. Just want to have this info so i cand be ready. Got to go snow blow 18 inches out of driveway. Ya got to love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

bummer. We had so much snow last year it collapsed a bunch of buildings. Hope you get through everything ok.

Am walking dead here...my GF had it for 10 days, never got out of bed, but I managed to elude it until Tuesday after diving....started going downhill....some kind of bronchitis/flu combination

real special stuff...and cannot get to a z-pack until Monday...

as for the ammonia...most likely you will not have to worry about it in a 75...most folks don't get much in bigger tanks..just be ready to make water changes if you have too...

When you feel better can I put package in tank leace it for 3 days . Come in off road tst and do water change if neded. How do you know how much in a 75 to bring amonia down to 0 . Answer this when you feel better.

Well Richard got my return looking for a 75 gal package rock sand Clean up crew. I see the prices what will it cost to ship all packages to Vermont . Also what about the above ?? i leave on Sunday return off road usually wed or thurs morning . Will this work as far as cycling. Tank will be on it's own during my absence. My wife can't moniter ect ect !! You can E-mail me on the $$ amount and answers or post them here . ronnygreeno@yahoo.com

Ya feel better toon me two months to get rid of it. Still worked though!!

I just went to your site and read all info on aclimateing and the cycle. I don't think I can do this not being gone 3 days straight in a week. Trying to figure how. Doesn't look good. I realy looked foreward to getting this 75 going. It'sa good deal for someone who"s home every day.

The reef tank is in general. I have known people who have tanks that are off on the road for weeks at a time, but without someone who can care for it daily or in case of emergency, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

It is not so much that it takes tons of work to keep going, but one day of your auto-top (or manual in my case) failing or a power failure etc. etc. with no one to act quickly you will likely come home to unhappy times.
If you can get a good friend hooked even a little bit, you could easily trade him beers etc. to help out and three days would not be too much, but without at least a daily look-see....Maybe there is a local reef club where a member might help out.

Sometimes as these posts get older, I think they get a little lost in the mix. If you are determined, I would email Richard directly at his website and describe your whole situation in detail. Sounds tough though. I would lean toward hold off until your lifestyle is more fitting or you get a good helper.

I guese my point was missed . I already have a salt water set up and fresh water set ups. i want to put up a 75 but it looks like the 1st shipment of raock and second has to be tested twice daily for at least a week . This seems like a problem. .

Most folks do not have much of a cycle....especially in larger tanks..

So does this meanRichard that I can get away with getting 1st shipment which I guese is base rockand sand . Not shure What 2nd shipment is smaller rock I quese . Put this 1st shipment in 75 gal tank . leav on Sunday be cone till wed or thursday test see what it looks like and same thing leave again on sunday. Usually home wed morning . leave again on sunday . Will this work ? I don't want to spend all this $ and end up with a dead tank. Seems like this is asking a lot. Usually, but there are never any guarantees, every tank is different!

I would draw a conclusion from what you read here!

Let me tell you my scenario. I started w/very life covered rock, very fresh from the ocean so the die-off scenario would be the greatest to be expected. Part one slowly crept up to ultimately about .5 ppm ammonia and zeroed out at about 12 days. I never had to make a water change during that time. I also left quite a bit of things in that I should have just pulled when they first started showing signs of death, so it probably went higher than it needed to. Mine is a 120 gal DT.

I know this is contrary to what I said earlier, but I didn't understand that you already had SW tanks. IF it was me, I would probably risk it. You are not likely to encounter a disaster after 3 days, maybe just lose a couple more sponges etc if you let it spike too high.

If you want to see what part 2 can be, look at my thread 'part 2 WOW' Everything but the 3 biggest rocks on bottom is part 2. It is different every time though, but always pretty cool rocks and extras.

I just modified the opening in my tank stand that had a door on it. made opening 8 inches larger to acomodate a 20 gal tank under the 75. For a sump to hold a bucket wth nylon scrub balls for biological .Anda skimmer and return pump. I'm going to do it . I got to wait till spring here . Just don't want to ship with it being so cold. Sounds by what you say I can pull it off. Don't get me wron i got a reef set up 25 gal but still have just touched the knowledge of this hobby!!

Thats was it. Peak. Never did a water change until it was all over.
 
Boy I want to do this ! Will have to be exact on tampa end for pick up at airport. Were they on time as far as date of delevery of all shipments ? Like I said in previous posts I'm on road 3-4 days a week realy want to try to do this. Would ther be much die off in 3-4 days that would realy bother in my absence . My wife is here but not into hobby. But I guese she could help if showed.

In my 55 gal - ammonia went up to 1.25 after about a week or so of having part 1 in my tank. I did a 25% water change, and everything was fine after that.
