I remember when...

In Memoriam
Back in the middle '80's I had a 29g saltwater fish tank.
Looking back, how pitiful it was.
It had the stock light tube that came with the tank, dolomite on top of a reverse undergravel filter, which was high tech at the time, and a couple small coral skeletons for decoration.
A Whisper HOB filter was all that I had.
I used tap water (what else - I had never heard of RODI), fed heavily with flakes, and had problems with "red slime" - imagine that!
After I read an article in some flier I picked up at the LFS, I built a DIY skimmer, that actually worked! In a weeks time, it would skim out a cupful of tea-colored water! Amazing.
It did improve the water quality a little, though.
I remember thinking, boy, it sure would be cool to have a tank with nothing but invertebrates like snails, crabs, starfish and shrimp. (I never imagined having corals though)
But how could you set it up? Where could you get them? What would you feed them?
No one will ever be able to do that!
The times sure have changed.
