where is a cheap/reliable place to get a clam online...?

i want a gold maxima.. or a nice colorful croacea < spelling off on that prolly.... and will it survive under 2 65 watt pc bulbs being like at least 8 inches from the bulbs? .. or does it need more light or just the opposite? and where/what would i feed it? whould phytoplankton work?
thanks for your time,
Chris

Chris,
For starters, I think you have nowhere near enough light to keep a clam, let alone a maxima or crocea. I would recommend MH at least for these species.
As far as feeding, phyto is good, I use powdered yeast because phyto is unavailable here. Do not target feed clams because it clumps when they feed and they "cough" it back up.
I can't help with a good place to buy clams because I'm not in the country. :D
Cheers,
Aaron

Under your current lighting you will be limited to squamosa, hippopus, and derasa. Unfortunately, all three of these species tend to grow quite large in home aquaria. Based on your lighting, it sounds as though you have a small tank.

IMO, for maxima and especially crocea, you need metal halide.

Live phytoplankton such as DT's or LiquidLife, in addition to good lighting, is all you would need for food.

I have a 55 gallon tank .. with a custom sealife 48" strip I retrofitted the strip so that I have two attinics and on one side I have a 10k pc as well so that I can keep some corals that dont like lotsa light on one side and ones that do on the other ... I remember back before pc lighting .. we used to keep clams... and they did fine... I'm definitely limity for lamp space on my tank only 13" wide.. I may just go and get a 75 gallon and do that ... I work at a LFS so I get every thing cost .... is the power that a halide needs gonna change the elec bill noticeably? and what size should i use? I like thw blue line Germanbulbs and can get them killer cheap....hmm... if I got the 75 I could just put the halide on the side with jsut the attinics so the light may look balanced too..I have some tree sponges that I dont want to burn with excessive light .. and if i just went and picked one up wouldn't that be too quick of a change for corals i have now?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris:

I know for a fact that Inland Reef Aquaria in Nashua, NH usually has some pretty sweet clams in stock most of the time.

Go check them out.

Coraldynamics.com has a deal for $10 if they pick the clams.

I haven't tried it but it looks great. The clams are only an 1" or so. So you'll have to feed them. At that small I don't know if they would even require very much light. My understanding, limited as it is, is that they don't go photo until they are over 3".

Jeff's Exoctic Fish has gold maximas for like $16.99 or 4 for $50 if your on their mailing list. I got 4 and they pretty nice. Will post pics later.

Shipping was like $60 but I got a few other things also to offset the shipping. I would guess for just 4 clams it would be about $30. HTH Pictures on the way soon
