I want a nano tank

add up the price of everything needed to end up with a functioning tank with just live rock. ask for the tank from mom and other bits and peices from other people for X-mas. If that works get it set up and cycle your rock.
Maybe after a few months of proving that you are not in a phase and she sees the tank growing and maturing then you can hit her up for some fish cash.
Followed after months of keeping them alive with some coral.
Believe it or not but just watching the rock come back to life can be very rewarding.
After months of this if it turns out that it was aphase and you dont want to keep up with it you can sell off the rock and tank pretty easy and no harm no foul

Since your parents say that you are too young to care for a nano tank, you could persuade them into getting a big tank! The larger the tank is, the less care you have to give for it, such as water changes. This is because if you had a large tank, you could stuff a great amount of beneficial bacterial in it to prevent weekly water changes. If you had a small tank, you would be only able to put a little beneficial bacteria. As a result, you would have to care for the tank a lot.

i dont think its the upkeep issue so much as the cost of setup. They already have anexisting marine tank so his parents already know about upkeep requirements. Larger is better but even a nano can cost up to 1000 bux to setup properly so a 55-100 g tank is probably out of the question as you are looking for 3-5 grand there once its all setup and stocked

I'm with the kid. Go kid Go!!!! Tell your folks that if they let you have your own tank then you will NEVER take up smoking, drinking or drugs!!!

Let me add that my now 10 yr old daughter wanted a guinea pig (we now have 4 lol) and a bunny (we now have 2), hamsters (had 13 at 1 point down to 2), land hermit crabs (4 of them),and a 10 gal freshwater tank besides my 2 dogs, 2 salt tanks and birds and a potbelly pig.
She doesn't pay much attn. to any of them. I take care of everything.
If your like that then I would say no lol.
She's lucky I love animals.

Just exactly what Mommy must be thinking except Mommy knows that to set up any of these tanks correctly, you are looking at at least 1K. I think little old Bobby is a plant!

hey man you can always start off with like a 1.5gal hex and for that you barly need filtration lighting is cheap asame with hood and if u do use a filter its not soem 110 gallon rated one only like a 20gallon rated one... iv got a nano i made and dident spend 1 cent i used a little betta tank i had around built a hood found soem light fittings around the house... its only 0.5 gal so i dont have any filter or stuff like that the LR/LS filter the water...o srry i did spend like 10 bucks on the LR/LS(the sand was from r tank in the lfs i work there:) ) and... im only 13 sooo if you can do it for that cheap and mostly ur self id say mum and dad will be happy

What do you need help with? Reef tanks need parts conducive to reef life. Do you have all the equipment needed to sustain a reef from your fresh water tank?
