I want a new tank

:p so I'm bored of my 30x12x18 standard 29. Ive been into the hobby for a year now, and with my first job I think I can afford a new tank. I plan on using the 29g as a sump. I would like something like 42x42x12. Do these dimensions sound good? I want something long and wide, but not very tall

IMHO.. stay away from the regular 55g!!! It has great length & height.. but they are really NARROW!! WIsh I had known before I invested!! lol
Maybe a 65 or 75g is what you're looking for ?? :)

I was looking for custom glass. 42x42x12 would be awesome. BUT if its too expensive, i might get a 75.

I agree bkramer. Narrow tanks when filled with LR look....well, look like a narrow tank. There is no room between the LR and glass and cleaning the glass become a nightmare. Cside is is also smart in limiting tank height as in the the taller the tank the more one needs to shell out on lighting. I would suggest a tank of at least 90 gallons and a little larger if you plan on it being you long term display. Use the 29 as a sump by all means. It may seem like a lot to shell out now but in the long term the initial expense is worth it and will give you more money for the prize piece of coral or expensive fish most true reefers almost alway end up purchasing.

Absolutely loved my 65 gal. 18 wide 36 long. nice dimensions. But my 125 is great too just longer. Unfortunately I am tearing it down. I am keeping the tank but selling everything else.

OP,
What about those dimensions appeal to you? It would be helpful, I think, to know why exactly you are considering those specific dimensions.

+1? IMO, you'd be better off sticking with a standard 48" tank. You would have more options for a stand (and canopy if you want one), and lighting. If you're thinking about a 75g, you may also want to think about a 90g. It has the same width and depth, just a few inches taller. If you like more depth, you can go with a 4' 120g (48x24x25).

sounds like you would like the cube tanks. they have a really nice Marineland 93g cube at my LFS for a fair price. Perhaps look into those as opposed to a custom made tank if you want to save money.

I like these dimensions because I want a long, wide, short tank. lol. I don't know what else to say. I feel with the 42 length and width i can do many things as far as aquascaping goes. the 12" width of my 29g leaves, as had been said earlier, virtually no room between the lr and glass. I also feel with the length and width, I have room for a small "school" of cardinals which would be cool. And with the shorter height, it is easier to clean

48x48 is great, but once you see it, I think the 12" height will be a little short. I would shoot for 18" as a minimum for that length. Otherwise it will end up looking like a frag tank.

In that case, go for it! Seems like you know what you like. I personally like the look of shallow tanks, so I won't be the guy that cautions you. You may want to take a look at a shallow tank, though, and be sure that is exactly what you want. I think they look fantastic, especially open top!

One thing to consider about custom sizes is that you may be able to get an even bigger tank for nearly the same amount of money since I BELIEVE they charge you by how many panels they need to cut into. Something to discuss with your glass cutter.

ty. this is what i was thinking too. 18" is definitely not too deep. but 12" might be too short

I love the look of shallow tanks too. How/ where do i get it custom made? I found sites online but they seem large scale only. I'm not worried about it being cheaper to get a larger tank. I dont even know for sure if my parents will let me get a larger tank :debi:

cside all i can tell you is get what you would like to get you may want to do a dyi tank the size you are talking about any class shop will cut it for you and make it rimless

I bought a 65g aquarium because I loved the dimensions (or so I thought) and now right before I go to set it up I have buyers remorse because I want the extra foot of length that a 75 would offer.. honestly, like others have suggested, I would buy as big as you can afford (keeping in mind maintenance costs) and go that route.

I have a 40 breeder and while I love the dimensions (36x18x16) I sometimes wish either my stand was taller or the tank was taller. The shallow depth makes it easy to light the entire height of the tank. I regret not going with a 50 breeder which would have been 18" tall. I really think for a tank you want to view from the front, 18" is about the minimum height.

If you want to look down a 12" tank is perfect though.

Good luck with the search!

I want a little of both. :spin1: I think 18 should be perfect for this
