I want seahorses, wife says not fun

Hi all, im new to this site, and just set up my 265g tank. My wife says seahorses will be boring and would like your opinion on this.
 
What kind of tank is it. If it is with other fish other than seahorses and pipefish I would say no. Typical seahorses don't move much so makes them very prone to being bullied plus you have to feed them a lot around 3-4 times a day. Plus they are very difficult to take care of.
 
Seahorse do well in seahorse only tanks, but can mix with a FEW fish.... As far as being boring thats all relative. In a tank of that size they probably would be hiding most of the time, plus it's hard to feed a horse in that big of a tank. Horses are picky eaters and quite frankly dont move fast. They are awesome creatures!! If you didn't have anything in the tank with them they would probably do great in your tank, but that seems to me to be a waste of tank space to have a 5" creature all by himself in a 265 gallon tank...

Since you have a very large tank if it were mine i would put a smaller shark in the tank along with maybe a sting ray!! That would be awesome! Maybe one day i will be able to do it.. It's the whole wife thing, she would kill me.

At any rate i would have to say your wife is right in this case, but for the wrong reasons to a point... Awesome interesting creatures, but hard to feed in a tank that size... GOOD LUCK!!
 
I was thinking they would be hard to feed in this size tank, i had a reef tank for about five years with corals. I dont have any fish in the tank yet, just finished the tank cycle, and now have diatom algae. I was thinking of buying some clown fish for a start, till the tank gets established. I read alot about what fish you can keep with seahorses, and if I do decide to go with them i dont plan on any other fish in the tank. I was thinking of a reef tank again, but the extra cost of lighting and other things for a 265g tank is pricey. Im not home during the day, except my wife if they have to be fed 3 times a day, she would have to feed them. Thanks for the replys, i have some time to think before i decide anything.
 
What are the tank's dimensions? With the right dimensions and chiller, it could be a nice tank for pots. They like to swim and I do think that seahorses are fun. There are people out there with large seahorse tanks.

i was thinking abdominalis as well...:thumbsup:
 
Probalem with pot bellies is that they just aren't as colorful as a reidi or kuda and people find them too bland.... I love how big they are, and their personalities are like no other! But then again you also have a feeding issue... If you want to tube feed them or dish feed them everytime then that would work for sure! But after awhile some people just dont want to do it...

Pot bellies would be a good choice if your ready to feed them 3-4 times a day you dont get your hope up about them being bright colored or exotic looking... Good Luck!!
 
Oh, I totally disagree! Pots look more like sea-giraffes than sea-horses! Where is David? He is a great cheerleader for pots. If I had the size tank that they require, I'd sell plasma to have the money for the chiller just so that I could keep pots!

I agree i love pots as well! I had 6 of them 2 years ago until the power went out last year for 4 days and things got ugly... I just think for a beginner they are tough. JMO!

since you're experienced w/SH, you realize that buying ANY SH for color isn't a good idea, as they SH will be any color they feel like...
 
I have a chiller that i used on my old 125g reef, i would have to check to see if its big enough to handle the new tank. I will have to read up a little more on pots. Glad im not in a hurry to put fish in yet (lol). Ive been adding to the tank as i go, when you get a tank that big everything doubles in price. Still need a skimmer yet, and thats about $400.00, got lucky on the live rock, only 100lbs came with the tank, i found a guy that was selling everything out of his 180g, he had 250lbs which i bought for $400.00 i also talked him into a 1700 gph pump with the deal. looked at marine depot and that pump sells for $300.00 itself. I bought the tank, stand, live rock, $700.00 in lighting, pump, and 90g sump for $1200.00. When i setup my last reef tank i had about $6000.00 in it so im trying to look around for deals this time. Have 4 kids to feed now, and a wife lol. Thanks alot for the replys and hope i didnt bore you with my project.
 
Not boring at all; the mere thought of seahorses in such a large tank makes most enthusiasts hearts flutter! Even if the tank doesn't end up w/ seahorses in it, it is always exciting to hear that someone is even considering it -- most people want to know what is the absolute smallest tank that they can put seahorses in... To the point that it gets pretty exciting to see a seahorse tank that is over 65 gallons (and not in a public aquarium!)

Lots of the seahorse enthusiasts here are big fans of all sorts of marine ornamentals, so I am sure they will be interested in hearing an update no matter what you decide to do.
 
Well things changed a little, the tank i bought, the front glass panel cracked, i dont know if it was from moving the tank that stressed it or if my floor bracing shifted. Well anyways i had a little flood in my house (lol), i decided to use my house insurance for the repairs, which they are taking care of very good. Im going to have a new tank in about a month from ******* aquariums, The new tank is going to be acrylic and 460g with a lifetime warranty, i was only going to get another 265g but the rep told me that for the same price he could build me a bigger tank due to sheet size and waste. The tank this time is going to be built in the wall to the garage. im in the process of building the garage right now, and by the time im done with the garage the tank should be here. I was not sure about that other tank because it was older and looked a little ruff, good thing i didnt put fish in right away. I will post some pics of the progress of the tank as i go, im going to put 2 skylights in the garage and build a tunnel down to my aquarium to help with some lighting, dont know if it will work but going to try it. going to be really busy in the next coulple of weeks, so if i dont reply right away dont worry ill be back. thanks.
 
That sucks, but sounds like your making out WELL!!! Cant wait to see it when it's done! Maybe you can take some pics to show us the progress!

you might try adding some of those solar tubes above the tank...i know someone who did that and it came out nicely for natural lighting.

and i agree...it sux about the old tank, but it sounds like you really scored on the new acrylic tank! (i'm a big fan of acrylic tanx).
