Ice Fire Echinata

:fun4: I know this has probably been asked a million times but what conditions do you believe the ice fire thrives in? Right now I have it about 1 ft away from a 150w 14k mh fixture and the frag i got is a beautiful four branch dark blue color. I heard it likes lower temperature... Unfortunately my tank runs at about 84 F. :blown: Everything seems to be doing fine so far...:bounce3:

I have the Icefire in my tank, and one of those aussie echinatas. They don't have the same color at all. In my tank, the Icefire is green bodied, with blue coralite tips.

I agree. My Ice Fire is the same coloration as SDguy's and prefers lower light. My Aussie Echinata, however, loves the higher light/flow and has no green in it at all.

I've got a "true" icefire frag that's been growing since Jan from a tiny nub. Been encrusting like mad lately at 81F, and the tank spiked to 86 a few weeks ago when A/C took a dump, didn't affect anything except maybe faded colors a little. Mine is in high light, random alternating flow. Colors are like SDguy says, green base with blue tips.

Got i from a reputable fish store so pretty sure its the real deal, they had a beatiful 6 in colony. Directly under somm 20k 400s, no green just cream and white. Looked exactly like that pic by unarce.

I'm just suspicious...

Prior to these aussie ones coming in, you couldn't find a frag bigger than 3/4" MAX of the Icefire. Now, suddenly people are getting large, multi-branch frags?

maybe it was their 6" colony that they had grown? He is in the Bay Area where the coral came from.

Now, if it was a 6" branch laying there on it's side for sale, 99% it's not the original icefire...

Well here in Toronto it seems when a coral similar to a named coral comes in they just go a head and call it that. They have sold wild Aussie Echinata as IceFire Echinata. Im sure there are other stores doing the same thing.

By the way where did the orginal icefire come from?

If I glued it sticking straight up, would that make you only 90% sure? :jester:

To the OP - I assumed this comment meant it was a relatively large, 4 branch frag. I apologize if I misunderstood.

Doh! You know what I mean Peter, I'm sure by now there are plenty of 6"+ colonies that people are fragging off of that have been grown from small frags...

Too true!
it really messes with me. i don't know what's what anymore...

anyway back to the question do you happen to know what lighting it was under before entering your system? that could be a big factor in keeping that deep blue colour.
also do ya got any pics?! this is one of my favourite corals

Hehehe, I know what you mean. I was justing being a jerk, Ian :blown:

This is a serious thread, about serious coral; that just happen to have silly names. :D

I think the ice fire enchinata is no different from the other enhinatas available. Largest "true" ice fire that I've seen photos of was about 4-5" tall and wide.

Im sorry but that is not true IMO. If you want a coral to have the exact DNA it has to come from the exact same place.

If what you said is true that would open up interpretation to what any of these corals are. If I get a wild coral in that looks like an oregon tort can I call it and sell it as oregon tort.....to me....NO because I havnt varified that it came from the exact same place or mother colony....I'm just making a guess.

If the orginal ice fire came from indo how the heck is a Aussie echinata an icefire? Its not. Name it something else or just call it an aussie echinata.

Uh oh, careful...some lounger might post a "serious cat" picture here :eek2:

I actually don't agree with this...like I said, I have both, and they don't look at all alike, color-wise, in my tank

IMO they are different corals, from different sources (unless the original icefire was smuggled out via Indonesia :D )

I have not seen a photo of one of the Aussie echinatas with as much green as the icefire. I have also not seen more than a handful of icefire frags for sale larger than an inch, and they were several hundred dollars each.

I have a 4-5 inch colony of the true icefire and I know the reefer I acquired it from has had it at least a year before I did. It looks much different than any of the Aussies I've seen come in, in that it has green body blue tip. My original post in this thread was said because it seems that any Aussie echinata coming in is getting the name icefire slapped on it. Buyer beware, if your in the market for the real deal. If you don't care about lineage and the history behind the piece, that's your prerogative. I didn't mean to derail your original post. My icefire is about 10" down and 8" off center of a 150w Phoenix, color is great and growth is moderate. I originally mounted the 1" frag at a 45 degree angle from vertical over an overhang to get nice steady flow to the majority of it. I'll try and get a pic. Hope this helps;)

Ill post a picture later, there is a little bit of green in the base but the one is the store was almost a solid blue... And yes, in the bay area we have access to top notch corals without getting raped. I got my frag for $75. Plus it's kinda nice when people are in the hobby for the fun of it, not just for profit.

Is it just me, or does this colony like to grow at a 45 degree angle to the left??

SDguy- You're assumption is correct, the size of the frag even surprised me... I think it's bc the store owner knew I was a new customer and drove 40 minutes twice in one week, LOL.
