icecap 4" fan power ?

i have a 90 gallon with an oak stand/canopy. i want to do a t5 retro in the canopy and would like to integrate 4) 4" icecap cooling fans into the equation and try to ultimately avoid the chiller if i could. these fans come with the quick-connect to go to an AC outlet and there is my problem. is there some kind of power supply that i could plug them all into rather than taking up 4 outlets with the power packs or do they all need their own plug? seems to me that with the little plug wired directly to the fan that there would be a power supply something to the effect of my computer. just trying to get some help before i buy these and cut up my canopy. any help is appreciated.

I have 4 icecap 4" fans:

However, they are NOT AC, they are 12vdc units. I run a 12vdc adapter 6amp unit (from NewEgg) in the cabinet, and a two wire cable up the end of the tank inside the canopy to all provide quick connectors to each fan.

Here is a photo that shows the top of the canopy containing the 4 icecap fans. Umbilical routes up into the canopy from the far end. :)

Am I reading that right? did it say $54 for a single 12V fan (essentially a computer fan)??? Does anyone else see something wrong with that?

I agree -- that's crazy.

I found SilenX Ixtrema Pro 120x38mm 18dBA Fan (IXP-76-18) at www.moddersmart.com They are $21 each.

They are only 18dBA (quiet) and push 90cfm. If you use a lower voltage, you can reduce the noise (and obviously reduce the air flow). Further, they are titanium powder coated, which should be great for corrosion resistance.

I am going to use one for my canopy and I am still looking into 60mm fans for cooling the T5's.

Good luck!

The Icecaps adjust their speed based on temperature.

That is the only reason they are better ( more expensive) than your basic computer fan.

thanks for the info regal. i will look into that NewEgg....basically its a power supply that i need. i like your set up BTW. ive never fooled with retro kits or anything of the sort but since this is my biggest reef tank project to date and im not THAT experienced, the research has gotten pretty in depth. plus making my own stuff is more rewarding anyways!

ADAPTER KINAMAX|AD-LCD12 R

This is the unit I selected from NewEgg. But any such AC>DC converter will work. The only reason I went with this one is that I also am using two 36" Nova Extreme Pro light fixtures, and I changed out the fans in them with SilenX 80mm fans which are dc. They also connect to the umbilical for the canopy fans.

What is the advantage of adjustable fan speed with temperature? Don't all light fixtures have fixed speed fans? Lights come on, fans come on.

One thought I had was to use 2 fixed 60mm fans on the lights and one 120mm in the canopy for circulation. The 60mm fans will come on with the lights and the 120mm will be on the ReefKeeper, set to come on at a desired temp.

These DC fans can be run from just about any (check wattage/current/voltage specs) DC converter.

High rev fan normally equates to higher noise levels. Therefore, if you do not need the CFMs due to low temp. then keeping the revs lower will reduce noise from the fans/air flow.

The Icepacs are low noise from what I have witnessed so far.
The fans in my 36" NEPs were very noisey so I changed them out. Orignial fans were 25 dBA; SilenX fans are 9 dBA! Big difference in noise.

so i looked at some power supplies on this NewEgg and came to one conclusion...IM LOST! what should i be looking for when i go to buy one of these guys? bear in mind i want to run at least 4, maybe more for the sump eventually??? i dont know what makes a "good" power supply for these fans.
