Icecap's new powerhead...Vortech

Anybody seen this ? Scroll down towards the bottom of the page. Looks very interesting with most of it being outside the tank. The only drawback I see with it is the ability to tilt or angle it up or down. There is a video you can download that shows the flow with little balls in the water. At max power it is supposed to put out 3100 GPH. Take a look.

Here's the thread on the IceCap forum. Click

I know for sure that both Atlantis and Bioreef will have them asap...haven't heard from Rob on that but knowing him, he'll have them too

I think they said limited availability in March, more in April so we'll see. I'm still going with a closed loop with an OM 4 way.

Yea they are really nice but the price sure isnt. I think they were saying a few hundred bucks a piece- NO THANKS.

If you compare to Tunze though, it's not as outlandish as it seems. I think that is the niche they are attempting with this. Maybe I'm wrong though. Either way, I agree they are a bit pricey, as are Tunzes IMO.

Reefkeeps is keeping an eye on these. I like the motor being on the outside. My Tunze Streams put out 45watt each in the tank. Until I get the heat under control I have been leaving my hood open during the day. The VorTech's design looks promising.

This one and the tunze are only overpriced because we are dumb enough to buy them anyway. If we stopped buying overpriced gadgets they would lower the prices. JMO

I agree, mcox33. They are overpriced, but how many other large volume pumps are available that have controllable variable speed electronic motors and with multi-pump control features that can produce a wide-spread softer flow at very high volumes? Some ppl can't wait for the price to go down or the company to go bankrupt from not buying.

I didn't buy these to have gadget toys in my tank. I had problems with my tank (for a long time) and water flow was one of the major contributors. Running five 1200 maxijets didn't help. Plus I had to down the number to two maxijets because of the amount of heat they produced (raised my tank temp a min of 5deg) so after much consideration and passing of time I pulled the trigger and went with the Tunze Streams. I have been very happy with the results, except for heat which is expected from anything in higher wattage that you put in your water. But the heat that one 6100 Tunze gives off (45watts) is comparable to two small 1200 maxijets (40watts) and the benefits out-weight the maxijets by far.

I guess it really depends on your individual tank requirements, amount of knowledge grasped through research and personal preferences of trying to create a more natural reef environment. And not to forget how much money your willing to throw at it.

I am all about one of these pumps when or if they have a way to angle the flow. of course I could always reaquascape my tank. My two main reasons for loving the idea of the pump is 1) lack of a heat transfer and 2) large amount of flow with low wattage and 3) a small space premium. That said, I am very pleased some stores in jax will have them, I am starting to loath mailorder wait times. I only hope the local stores can have a comparable price with the online vendors. I mean within reason not a $75 or $100 difference. It would be worth a few extra $ to not have to wait after all.
