"ICH FREE TANK" Quest Begins

I don't know why Jonny's picture didn't post. Here he is, I've never seen him smile that big!

tank sitting at 1.009
did it in 2 water changes this time as sg was only at 1.021 to start.
about 70 gallons changed.
think i will let it sit in hypo for 5 weeks this time.....

I brought a new coral beauty home from the LFS tonight. The LFS water was quite WHACKED OUT. The Alk was 16 dkH, normal is 8-12. Anyway, I did a slow drip acclimation for about 3.5 hours then put him in the 20g QT. He swam around checking the place out for about 45m until lights out. So, a new journey begins.

Assuming he acclimated OK, I'm going to dose Cupramine gradually up to 0.05, and hold him there for 14 days, then decide what's next.

I bought another Sailfin two days ago. He's a good bit smaller than the last one. I completely cleaned out the QT and re set it up. That was a chore! After two days he's not looking to good, I'm hoping he just needs to acclimate a little. I stuck to my theory of one fish at a time, but he sure looks lonely. I'll keep you posted.
Dave, Good luck with the CB. BTW, my fuge was FULL of cheato, and I thinned it out for the first time a few weeks ago, I'll always appreciate that.

i think the only need for such a lengthy acclimation like that would be for a large salinity difference..going from low-high.

acclimating for an alk difference IMO, should not be an issue.

what is the biggest difference you observe in behavior/appearance of this fish?

i also think the single fish qt is the easiest to deal with.

The coral beauty perished overnight. No explanation. It was a nice gradual acclimation, she never showed any stress. Swam around the tank gently after release for about an hour, no signs of stress. I've had this happen too many times with new fish. I'm out of ideas.

it's probally the shipper and the method of cathing the fish that killed it. sorry to hear about the C.B.

wow..*** happened with that...

let me ask,,,
how long was fish at lfs?
how well was it eating there?

if this is something that is happening frequently then i would suggest the following:
1. purchase from different location
2. do not purchase fish that have been at lfs <2 weeks
3. re-examine your acclimation process

oh ya.. my freaking bluethroat has began to demolish my chromis population...crapola!!!..so much for the schooling effect for this tank...
perhaps he isn't being fed enough... sort of happened suddenly..

It's been a while since I've been on line. Dave, you won't believe this. I lost the Sailfin just like your CB. I guess you wern't meant to have a CB and I wasn't meant to have a Sailfin. I don't have the cahoona's to try another one. I'm going to hold up where I'm at for a while. It seems like it was meant to be just the way it is. Of the last group that was in my QT (4 fish), the Sailfin and Coral Beauty died in QT. The jaw fish and wrasse made it into the display, and I thought they were OK. The jawfish swam right into the hole that my other jawfish has, so I thought it would do great, but it never came out. I still haven't seen it! The wrasse, which is not supposed to live well in tanks is doing great. He was the one I wanted the most, and had the least hope for. Go figure! Anyway, my tank is staying like it is till after the summer, then I might try another Sailfin, in the mean time my corals are growing like weeds and all the fish are happy. Now I have to figure out something to do with the QT.

Trigger,
I had my FOWLR between 1.008 and 1.009 with UV sterilization for 38 days and I still saw my Sohal take an occasional scratch on the sandbed now and then.

I started to bring up the salinity on the 39th day due to my Blue angel's coloration loss and the live rock started to look like crap with black cyno forming. Their at 1.018 now.
I couldn't wait the full 8 weeks, might have to start over again.

So Kick-Ick double dosed @ 3 treatments = failed
No Sick Fish @ 5 treatments = failed
Hypo-Salinity @ 1.008-1.009 @ 5 weeks + a day or two = might fail (will see after NSW)

Guy, sorry about the sailfin! I'm taking a breather - getting a coral or two. Not sure what's next on the fish front.

pecan..thx for the update....i wouldn't get to discouraged yet..untill you see the dreaded spots.
why don't you just leave the salinity where its at right now for a couple weeks and see how thinks look?

You guy's might think I've lost my mind. My LFS just got in a Helfrich's Firefish. These are hard to find, and are pretty expensive, between $200 to $250 (Foster & Smith has them at $249 and The Marine Center has them at $199 ) if they even have them. The guy's at the LFS are friends of mine, so they sold this one to me at $100. No way could I pass that up. Then the question came, to QT or not to QT. The only fish I've ever added to my big tank without QT was my Mandarin and that was because of their particular diet requirements, and that they have a good slime coat on them. After a lot of conversations, as a group, we all decided that it would be best not to subject this guy to the stress of QT, so I drip acclimated him and put him in. I also considered that Firefish do not seem to be as prone to Ich, and this one looked very healthy. Here's a picture of him. I believe I made the right decision. As additional proof that I've lost it, they had three more Sailfins, and damn it, I want one in my tank. Now this is NOT a fish that I would ever consider throwing in a display without QT, but since my efforts so far have been absolutely, hideously terrible with Sailfins, I decided to convert my QT to a regular tank, with real sand, live rock, and everything else that a tank should have, and I picked the healthiest one they had. I bought a couple other fish that I liked, to keep the Sailfin company. I will not treat this tank for Ich, and if it breaks out, I will let it run it's coarse to see what happens. If theres no Ich, the Sailfin will go in the big tank, along with the Longnose Butterfly, and the Solar Wrasse and blennies will occupy and live happily ever after in the 50 gallon tank. Heres a picture of how the QT looks set up normally. I'll probably add a little more LR to it. Oh, I forgot, I HAD to buy another clam too.
