Ich - on a mandarin

Have read several threads on people keeping mandarins in QT just can't remember if they used hypo on them. If I see any of those threads I'll post a link here.

I've read ATJ's articles on Ich repeatedly, heard presentations on it, and read up on some of Steven Pro's work. None of these deal with Ich with a fish like a Mandarin, which is why I came to this forum in case someone had something definitive to share.

Mandarins not much different than any other fish .. like other bottom dwellers it tends to have a thicker mucus lining which helps with ich .. but thats not a sure fire guarantee.

Mandarins will do fine with hypo .. since your Mandarins got ich then you should assume that all fish in the tank have ich. If you want an ich free tank then treating all the fish and leaving the ST without fish is what I would recommend.

Catching the Mandarin is not much different than catching a lawn mower .. real PIA.

If you website talks about Mandarins not getting ich .. you might consider revising.

He came up to the front glass this evening and unless ich burrows under the flesh and causes bumps, I don't know what he's got. It looked like blisters, but he moved away before I could even think to grab my camera.

Raised bumps that were probably under the flesh because the bumps' coloration matched the particular area where it was.

The fish was sleeping at the front glass, so I grabbed my red LED light and took a few more pictures. You can see the blisters or tags on its body. In a couple of pictures I circled them.

Since that worked well, I thought I'd push my luck and use the flash. Unfortunately my nerites keep laying eggs on the front glass nightly, so there are some spots blocking a perfect view.

Just an uneducated guess. It looks to me as if it is some type of parasite. The different sizes representing different stages of life of the parasite. The mandy may have more than one problem here (ich and something else). The problem with catching the mandy and QTing it would be food. I would think it would have a better chance of survivial in the display where it has a readily available source of food. However, your other fish are at risk. A true conundrum (I've been waiting to use that word all week  )

If it sleeps near the glass at night I would suggest catching it at night and putting it in QT if possible.

This is what it looks like now. The white spots are gone but now there's a big splotch on it. He isn't swimming around when I look at the tank, so I doubt he's eating anything.

Steve, I remember that picture. If you can point me to the right link, I'd really like to reread that thread.

The mandarin today didn't have any of the white dots, but the splotch was there. I wonder what will happen tomorrow.

After using garlic and ginger the fish got better in that thread, it is long time a go but the PBT and now the PT get the same parasites but now i use nothing the parasites will go away in about a month on there own . I still say it is Ick i always had Ick in my tank it only gets bad when i stress the fish up by playing in the tank  Looks like the fish encapsulate the ICK parasite with something , it is just strange i will never know :o .
How i know i have Ick always in my reef i got my Emperor out off my reef tank and put him with some other large fish in my FOWLR tank that i had running for four years never had any ick in that tank ever. After i put the Emperor in there every fish had Ick in that tank in three weeks .I had to take all the fish to my LFS to get them treated for Ick .
Some of the fish made it some did not i got the LFS to sell all the fish and give the tank away. I had to many tanks now only have one and that may be on it way out.:(

I've not seen it since the 12th. I don't know if it is fine now or if it died, but I always keep hoping for the best and watch for it to reappear from the rockwork.
