ich treatment

does kick ich really work?

have people used this product much? i'd love to get some feedback on it as i have my fish in a QT tank trying to treat ich.

IME, for every hobbyist who says kick ich, or any other bottled ich "cure" has worked, you'll get 10 who say it didn't help. The problem with therse cures is that they don't work with enough consistancy to be called reliable. In many cases, fish get better in spite of the treatment, and not because of it. There are two proven cures for marine ich; copper and hyposalinity. Anything else is a crap shoot and you're likely to be disappointed (and yes, I've tried a few of the "cures" with no results other a lightening of my wallet.)

Here's what one WetWebMeida crew member had to say about Kick-Ich:

"IMO, this stuff is better used as salad dressing than a fish "medication"...and please don't use it in your main tank! It's really a "pepper sauce", intended to make the fish slough off body slime in the hope that the parasites go with it...Also- are you sure that ich is what you are dealing with? Please verify the illness (assuming it is an illness, not just an injury) before using any medication. Sometimes, administering the wrong medication can be worse than not medicating a fish at all."

Remember that nothing, nothing, is "reef safe". If you dump anything in your main tank with any inverts, you will most likely kill them (and maybe the ich).

Your best bet is to remove all fish to a hospital tank, raise the temp in the hospital tank to mid-80s, and treat with copper (so long as your fish are not ones that do not tolerate copper, in which case you'll have to use another method--formalin, etc.). Also, raise the temp on your display to mid-80s and let sit for 6 weeks minimum.

has worked many times and every time and reef SAFE

This suggests to me that it doesnt work. The only way to fully get rid of ich is to take all fish out of tank and move them to a separate tank to treat with copper. After treatment, they should be left in QT for 2 months. The main tank should consists of no fish for 2 months and raise temp to 82-83 degrees with sand bed agitation. Every fish should be QTed before placing in main tank. Its better to get rid of it the first time it occurs then having to buy multiple remedies. IMO you are wasting your time with these "reef safe" medications, the ich will return, and stronger than before. Good luck.

Copper is one way to treat c. irritans. Hyposalinity is another proven method. This is preferred over copper by many since certain fish are copper sensitive. IME, if the fish is asymptomatic for a full three weeks after the treatment has begun, it is safe to reintroduce it to the display. I will normally allow a fourth week, coinciding with the time it takes to raise salinity back to DT levels.
