hello everybody.
i hope to find some real help here. i just spent another hour reading posts in here about the parasite.
here is the situation. i love near to the beach, in the months i cant surf i go snorkeling and free diving. i usually keep octopus and especially morays at home but since i dont want them to spend the rest of their life in a tank (and i also get bored quickly) i always replace them and bring them back to the ocean. i do that since years and i visit morays i had here or those which are too big to take and i know exactly where they live out there.
now the topic ich parasite: i dont really have a lot of fishes because of the parasite. i started using regular water (filtered) and added aquarium salt like most people would do it, but then switched to real ocean water.
there are specific fishes that are extremely sensitive such as puffers - and those are the fishes i like most because of they amusing personality.
i have tried EVERYTHING. hyposalinity didnt seem to work, but maybe the salt level wasnt low enough. i have read some posts here of people treating the tank with way more concentration of fresh water than i had.
i also tried copper but here i have the problem that i cant seem to test it with the copper kit, because the colors are all yellowish and its even almost impossible to see any difference on the test card itself.. plus, the parasite always seem to grow very fast and just kill the fish in less than 3-4 days. but thats only puffer, other fishes lived weeks with it.
i also tried to leave my tank without any fish for 2 months which wasnt easy but then again, i always have morays, do they get the parasite or not? because most morays are immune for all kind of disease and i never was able to see any signs of the parasite on them, but on the other hand they are considered being fish too i think.
i just lost another 2 puffers in less than a week after i got them.
i do have a quarantine tank and i am going to set it up now with lower salt concentration to see if i can get it get to work.
few questions:
- do morays get the parasite or not? nobody was able to answer that question yet.
- on what levels was the specific gravity when you had success?
- anybody having experience with puffers?
i know parasites can be in the water and on rocks, but even though i am getting ocean water, i think the main problem is bring home new fishes.
