hey guys,

Ive searched and searched to no avail finding any threads about Ich.

My clown has it, i plan on treating with cupramine very soon, however my LFS wont bring it in for me.

They are pushing that Rubys Kick Ich. has anyone had any success with that product? or should i stick with the cupramine treatment?

Only one LFS in your area?

over 25 years ago, I went to a drug store and bought a one pound can of CuSO4.5H2O. I still have it and the stock solution that I made from it.

If you make a stock copper solution and mark a line with permanent ink and date it, you can fill it to that level after a few years with pure water and use the same stock copper solution again.

Some people much prefer cheleted copper. I would use cheleted copper only in special situations.

You need good commonsense, good quantitative skill, to make your own stock straight copper. Not difficult if you have taken a high school chem class.

If you have an accurate small scale it would be easier.

Stick with Cupramine...That reef safe crap does not work. Just make sure you have a treatment tank that is well cycled for the fish to go in...

I would find another LFS.

thats the thing, there isnt another LFS for 8 hours lol...

i am seeding sponges from my DT now, and will be setting up my hospital tank tomorrow or monday, depending on when the cupramine comes in

You are just now seeding a sponge. Not a good approach.

You should have seeded your sponge about 5 weeks ago and cycled the sponge.

Whether it works now depends on the bioload in QT and also how you seed the sponge in DT.

Now, you have a better chance of having enough bacteria to rid the QT of ammonia by using the sponge as the medium inside a power filter running in the DT for as long as you have time for. Don't just put the sponge in any part of the sump in the DT. If you can just drip return water in the DT over the sponge, it would be similar as using a filter.

In general, why would you seed a medium with bacteria? It is just the first step in a cycle. If you can just seed a medium and then use it as a medium to process ammonia in the presence of livestock, why would the process of cycling ever become recognised as necessary in a DT? Just think about it.

In terms of nitrification (not denitrification and other microbial balance), the QT is similar to the DT. Ammonia is toxic in QT and in DT. Nothing magical is going happen to rid the QT of ammonia.

You medium in QT should have been cycled, and very well.

More than one sponge may be needed depending on the bioload.

Wow I can't believe a LFS would not have any cupramine. But in any case the reef safe stuff does not work. The only stuff that works is copper, hypo and quinine sulfate. I also hope you ordered a copper test kit....

Just a heads up for your use of Cupramine in a QT that is not fully cycled. If you start seeing Ammonia rise then the use of an ammonia binder such as Amquel+ or Prime cannot be used(see warning label of Cupramine). It will release Cu from its bound state and could be toxic to the fishes.

Probably another reason the LFS is recommending Kick Ich?

If your Qt is not fully cycled you can use Stability, it will keep the ammonia in check and can be used with Cupramine. I verified this with Seachem. I would wait 24hrs after using Stability before adding fish but it does state on the bottle that fish can be added at any time as long as Stability is used for at least 7 days straight. Please do not use Amquel or Prime with Cupramine it is almost guaranty you will lose all your fish.
