hey guys... just wondering about some treatments for ich...

about a week ago i qted all of my fish.... and i just emptied out the qt tanks and cleaned it with soap. rinsed it really well to make sure there was no soap left...

i treated the tank with rid ich while the fish were in it and did water changes every day. thats the only method ive used so far...

the fish seem to be doing fine now... i'm gonna use rid ich one more time but i was wondering if i should use hypo or a fw dip...


what salt level does the water have to be for hypo... the fish being treated are 1 byno goby (sand sifter), 1 purple pseudochromis, and 2 clown fish...

any other advice would be great too... i'm currently rinsing the tank some more so i make sure theres no more soap but let me know asap whether i should mix up some hyposalinated water or do fw dips before i return the fish to their tanks?

I''m sort of confused about what you are doing and I am not familiar with rid ich. Where are the fish now? I do want to respond to one question though. Do not "mix up some hyposalinated water". If you are using hyposalinity for ich, you start out with normal salinity and gradually drop the salinity over at least a 48 hour period until it measures exactly 1.009 on a refractometer. Any lower and you will kill the fish; any higher and it is not effective. The fish must be kept at this level for four weeks after the ich spots disappear. The other factor in treating ich is that the display tank must be kept fish free for 6-8 weeks for the ich parasite to die in the display tank. Otherwise the fish will be re-infected when you put them back in the tank.
 
lol yeah sorry about the confusion... rid ich is a formalin/malachite green combination that works really well against ich.

right now im cleaning the tanks with hot fresh water... the fish are in a styrofoam box while i do this... not for too long... just the one i use to drip acclimate them.

i have all the salt water mixed up already with a heater in there so i can get the fish in there as soon as im done cleaning the tanks.

i was confused about hyposalinity but now i know how to do it... i will start with the normal amount of salt in the water... then replace a couple gallons around every 12 hours until it is down to 1.009 on the refractometer.

i have had the fish in the tank for a week now with everyday rid ich (the malachite green and formalin mix) treatments. i will do hyposalinity in the tank for 6 weeks and i'm leaving my display tank without fish for 8 weeks.... should i leave it fishless for longer? or will that be ok and the ich will be completely out of my tank?
 
Just FYI, It is recommended not to use any kind of soap in your tank. If you already have, rinse, then rinse some more. If you need something more than water, use vinegar and water, but rinse thoroughly with this as well. Hopefully you have had the salt water mixed for the QT for at least several hours (12-24 hours is recommended) Make sure the salinity, alk, and temperature of the water in the tank match the water in the styrofoam box pretty closely. Are your fish still showing signs of ich? Unless they are miserable with it, my instinct suggests that you match the water and wait a day or two before you start hypo. They have probably had enough changes for 24 hours.
 
ok.. yeah i rinsed for about half an hour straight.... lots of hot water rinsing. good to know in the future not to use any soap though... thanks! yeah ive had the water mixed for a while.. at least two days i think... i matched everything... they arent still showing signs of ich.. in fact i think its all cleared up ... well... theres no white spots... i know it can still be floating around which is why i wantd to get rid of the old water even though i do water changes every day. ill wait before starting hypo probably like two or three days.

in the main tank i think i can actually see the tiny tiny parasites on the glass... its kinda weird to watch but its fun to watch my cleaner shrimp eat them lol.

Don't know, never heard that they could be seen my the naked eye. You may be seeing copepods on the glass.
 
hmm maybe... theres a bunch of them all over the glass... which is why i thought that it was the ich... maybe not though... oh well... im a newby! lol
 
Have you read through the two threads at the very top of this forum (marked with *) There is a ton of info there for newbies. You sound like you are interested in doing things right; if you want a good read, pick up "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert Fenner.
