Ick outbreak

Dealing with a full blown ick outbreak. have about 15 fish and i know i need to get them all out for treatment and leave DT fallow and i'm working on that. I have one fish out already and is being treated right now in a 20g tank with CP and is responding great. He was practically almost dead when i got him out (that is the reason i was able to catch him, he was just lying on the ground) and now for the first time in a week he is eating again.

I have a 75g tank i'm planning to maybe setup to put the rest of the fish, but another question i have is can i get some other fish out right now and add them to the 20g that already has an ongoing CP treatment that is about 48hrs into it? Also, how may mg of CP would i need for the 75g tank? I was able to only get 8 250mg tablets from a pharmacy and I used 3 of them on the 20g tank. Could i possible transfer the contents of the 20g into the 75g and just add the rest of my tablets?

Glad to hear the fish is improving!

IIRC a standard 75 is about 71 gallons in terms of actual volume. 11 250mg tabs (2.75 grams) is the dose you need. Each tab treats about 6.6 gallons of water.

As long as there is adequate territory and NH3 is controlled, I can see no harm in adding other fish to the 20, but with that many fish, they can't all go in there.

how many do you think would be the max? i've got AC110 running on that little 20g filled with cycled ceramic media so i know it can handle a big load. i used to have this filter running on my 75g tank before i took it down and had 9 fish in there.

Depends on how large and aggressive the fish are, and how much aeration there is. O2 depletion might be a concern with such a small surface area.

Do you think it would be worth a shot to feed the DT with Dr G's food? This stuff has CP as the main active ingredient in it

When i got home my powder blue was in dire straights...i would not be able to catch a healthy fish in a 240g reef tank...well i was able to just scoop him up. My QT has my white tail bristeltooth tang that is doing great in there with CP treatment. The salinity in the QT right now is at 1.014 and the DT is 1.025. I know fish can handle going down a lot easier than up so i decided to put in in there.

Well the shock had him go into convulsions i would describe it as and now he is staying like this....is he a gonner or can i do something to help?

Should i add more CP to the tank?

He looks to be a goner. Might wanna pull him out of those rocks and put him in a specimen container near the top. I thought you said (in another thread) you had velvet in your DT? If this is velvet, and not ich, then a FW dip or formalin bath might be worth a shot with the PBT (don't see how it can hurt at this point).

FYI; I see a couple of things wrong in that QT. First problem is the rock. Multiple people have reported CP failures when dosing CP in their DT (with rock). I suspect rock may absorb CP the way it does copper. Second, why is the SG all the way down to 1.014 in the QT?

He's actually swimming upright since i posted the video..still breathing hard but he was doing that anyways in the DT. No, this is not velvet, if it was he would have been long gone by now. He's been displaying symptoms of this now for over a month. He was still eating like a pig but he kept hanging out by the power head if he wasn't eating. As for the rock, i'm not using it for filter purposes, my HOB is plenty and can handle the bioload, but its for the fish to hide. Didnt know it would effect CP, we'll see how it goes..i added an extra 250mg tablet of it tonight. As for the salinity..i had lowered it to help my other tang that is in there until i was able to obtain CP. My other tang in there was in the same boat as the powder blue, even worse i can say but now is looking good since I lowered the salinity and dosed CP. I didn't know when i was going to get the CP so i was in the middle of going down in the salinity to get to hypo levels but my prescription came in before i got to 1.009 and i just left it there.

When a fish reaches a state like my PB, is there anything we can do like a bath with CP at a higher dose that would provide immediate relief?

Anyone have any tips on catching fish if you don't have a trap and don't want to dismantle the DT tank? Just about got my 75g QT ready and will want to start getting everyone out of the DT.

Sometimes this works - dig out a big hole in one corner of the tank, so it is the lowest point. Then drain all your tank water into vats. Hopefully as the water drains, all the fish will swim to the low point and get trapped there. Unfortunately, this technique doesn't work too well with small fish that sleep in rocks.
