Ok so i havent added anything new in months and now my clowns are showing ick,, treatment 1 with freshwater dip cleared up and now its back ....... help
thanks morgan
If they are well established and healthy there is a good chance they will overcome it on their own. Helping with Metronidazole, garlic and vitamins(Selcon and Zoe) soaked up in freeze dried brine shrimp fed twice a day appears to help as well IME. The only way to be sure you rid them of it is with copper or hypo treatment in a QT tank and six weeks out of the main tank.
hth, Chris
The only proven way to kick it is copper ot hypo. DO not listen to guys who tellya to just feed garlic or other unproven methods if you want to save the fish and be 100% sure to not ever deal with it again. That is unless you buy fish and don't QT again and it will more than likely find its way to you again. You need some instant bio filter for a seperate QT tank. Do you have a HOB or some other filter with old media in it? Old Water just from the display does not have any way to process the fish waste.
A cheap rubbermaid container, heater (or not if room temp is not to cold and concistent) and a few Power heads or something for flow is all you need to do hypo. Well a refractometer is a must if you don't have one.
Or do copper (seachems cuppermine is the best) in the same set up but is a lot harsher on your fish and the display has to be fishless for 4-6 weeks anyways to let the ICK die out so hypo is my choice.LMK if you need advice with how to do either.
You will be looking at daily water changes to keep the ammonia down in a uncycled hospital tank also... Hope they make it for ya
A lot of people have had luck with Fishdoc's recipe. But to be sure its gone if you have a lot of money in the fish or are attatched to them hypo or copper is the only proven way.
Also a FW dip will just dislodge the ick that is ready to fall off at the moment. It does nothing to the ones embeded in the flesh not "ripe" and looking like a grain of salt yet. So yes it came back when they finished the host part of the cycle to fall off and encyst on the aquarium floor only to let off many free swimmers to reinfest the fish all over again.
