Hint. Pelagic and found in nearly all coastal tropical and temperate waters except the Eastern Pacific.
 
Looking at Bob Fenner's site he got fooled thinking a cobia was a remora, so you have good company. The key is the structure of the dorsal fin, as the remora has a specialized structure for adhering to the underside of other animals.
 
I remember seeing Epinephelus lanceolatus "Bumblebee grouper" on DD a number of times. Those get even larger than the cobia, though they aren't pelagic. Not to say either are good candidates for most home aquariums. Then again, some of the builds I have seen on this site could probably support a pelagic 100lb fish.
 
My big tank is 2700 gal, so I have a larger home that could give me a couple of more years with this little one.
