I have an reef established tank. Nothing fancy...but had a small cluster of zoo's for 2 years.....today, there is a purple thumb looking baloon type growth about 1 in. tall by 1/2 in wide.....have no clue where to begin searching photos.
I will try to take a photo, but as always can't seem to upload well enough for viewing.
Thanks,
Meg

Looks like some kind of macro, but not totally sure on this one.

Thankyou, I thought a possibility was an stem to send out a new colony or something bizarre. Looks like a giant ick or purple grape...
Thanks for your reply!
Meg

here's a pic of one of my red macros from when I was a macro freak. Does this resemble it? I never could ID this one.

edit: this is not Botryo (red grapes), gracilaria(lettuce-y), or the red fingers

It does look like a very large polyp but it is quite translucent.and it thins out to nothing at the base for attachment........I guessIi will not bother it and see what happens in the next few days. Thanks every one...sea grape id still seems to be the closest resemblance....

I am totally looking at the wrong thing.

are you talking about something in the middle of the yellow polyps? :D I was looking at that big purple shroom looking thing (which probably is a shroom) next to the paly's

a little stem with a balloon definitely sounds like Botry. I also got these little ones that never got any more than one stem and one bubble

How did every one post their photos on this forum for the alga shots? . I have downloaded to photobucket. I get lost once I try to upload from this site...I do not know where to "browse "from to get to the PB site. Ususally I direct "browse" to my own pc....
curious and appreciative:)

it's not Neomeris. That is a horrible picture of it with that red crap all over it. Neomeris look like little round matchsticks with a white trunk and green tip. They are heavily calcified.

you have a red algae, there's no doubt about that (vs a green or brown algae) Neomeris is a green algae.

I see the purple mushroom thing is looking more like an sps in that other pic.:D what is that next to the paly's? it looks like it is encrusting nicely.

**edit**

Ok... I edited, and enhanced the photo a little bit.. Are we takling about #1, #2, or am I way off? If it is #2 it is a tunicate (sea squirt). They are harmless filter feeders. #1 maybe a muchroom?
